On January 28, 2021, the film "Give Oak in Yuba County" is released. In our review, you will learn interesting facts about the plot, filming, actors and main characters of this action-packed black comedy.

Women in the spotlight

Tate Taylor and his co-stars on the behind-the-scenes film "Give Oak in Yuba County" decided to shoot an unusual, controversial film in Mississippi. As with many of the director's films, most of the women were on the offscreen crew.

“A lot of women have worked on this picture, both on and off the camera,” says Norris. “Among them are cameraman Christina Voros, costume designer Olga Mill, first assistant director Clelet Ellington, producer Riva Marker and executive producer Robin Mulcahy Ficichella, who also took over the line producer functions. What's more, Tate and I have worked with most of the women on the offscreen many times before.”

“I couldn't help but rejoice seeing all these talented women on set,” Idoko says. "I wanted the chaotic world I had invented to be inhabited by women, so that women finally had a chance to prove themselves in business."

“The script absorbed me,” the writer continues. - I was obsessed with the desire to create a world of women who make mistakes and create chaos around themselves. When I saw which actresses would play the main roles, I was overjoyed. And there were many women on the offscreen team, including cameraman Christina Voros, which is great! It's great when there are so many of the fairer sex on the court. It is very interesting to look at such a story from a female point of view."

Idoko, who was constantly on set during the filming, adds: “I had an incredible feeling when I saw the story that I invented at the time is being born. It was my first film, so watching it was really cool. Before my eyes, my imagination came true."

“I liked the script from the very first pages,” says Jenny. - It had dynamics, and gloom, and humor, and violence - in a word, a great cocktail! Sue Buttons is usually invisible to most people around her, including her husband and her sister. And at work, they don't pay much attention to her. This could not but touch me. I considered it my duty to play the role of this woman."

“Although this movie is about Sue, there are many other incredibly interesting characters in the plot,” Jenny continues. - Mila played the role of a desperately determined Nancy, who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Mila is one of the actresses who give themselves to the role entirely, without a trace and play selflessly, with soul. Regina's heroine must also be reckoned with!

In some scenes Regina looked at me, but it seemed that she was looking right through me. Exactly what you need, because her heroine is one of the few who sees all the ins and outs of Sue. Awkwafina in her role was formidable, scary, sexy, eccentric - she perfectly got used to her role. In short, it was a very strong cast."

“When I heard that Allison would play the role of Sue, I thought there was no better choice,” Idoko says. - When I saw her in the role, every time I was speechless. Sue is facing a difficult emotional test, and thanks to Allison's talent, we see how all the milestones of this emotional test are reflected in her facial expressions. You literally can't take your eyes off her."

Executive Producer Stuart Ford understood that Oak Writing in Yuba County was a promising project for his AGC Studios for many reasons.

“The producers of the Blacklist and Nine Stories were looking for funding sources. Tate was named director and Allison played the role of Sue Buttons, lists the alluring benefits of the Ford project. - We read the script and immediately considered the impressive potential of the project. In general, any project that Allison takes on promises to be great.

Plus, Allison Jenny is always a pleasure to work with! Tate also has an impressive track record, especially considering the predominantly female cast and voiceover on the set of his films.

The unique, vibrant characters also played an important role in AGC's decision to take part in the production of the film. Usually we are interested in multinational stories, both full-length and television, and this film was just one of those.

With so many obvious benefits, we simply could not refuse to participate in the work on "Give Oak in Yuba County." And we agreed long before Tate announced the all-star supporting cast."

Other actors involved in the film did not hide their delight at the opportunity to work with Jenny and each other.

“I've never played a character like Nancy before, the more interesting it was to work on the role,” admits Kunis. - I played all my scenes with Allison, we got along well, creating harmony, like yin and yang.

Allison makes each of her roles unique. At the same time, she can rebuild in the blink of an eye, changing the fate of the victim to a fighting stance, so I had to constantly be on my guard. In general, in her performance, Sue has become a very versatile heroine."

Awkwafina says about her heroine Mina: “This is one of those roles that comes to life in the imagination when you read the script. Although I had to puzzle a little over how to play this unusual villain. Tate said that the main threat from my character comes from her unpredictability, which is what I emphasized. In addition, it was very pleasant and interesting to work in such a wonderful team."

Bridget Everett says about Allison Jenny: “She is very generous both as an actress and as a person. She always strives to bring the role to perfection, and looking at her, one involuntarily thinks with what great actress we are all lucky to work. Actually, I admire all the women who worked on this film. Tate managed to find a very strong, talented line-up, so it was very pleasant to work in such a society."

Screen legend Juliet Lewis complements the already stellar cast. Lewis has earned critical acclaim and the love of an army of fans, playing roles in films such as "Cape Fear" by Martin Scorsese, "Husbands and Wives" by Woody Allen, "Natural Born Killers" by Oliver Stone and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" Lasse Hallström. She was hilarious as TV show host Gloria Michaels, who ultimately decides to deal with Sue Buttons' problem.

Thanks to Lewis' talent, Idoko's brilliant script and Taylor's direction, the crew of Give Oak in Yuba County was able to showcase the foundations of modern American life. The film shows that the media are able to get to any corner of any city, even the most secluded, so it is simply impossible to hide from them.

Good relationships in the acting team were passed on to the specialists of the offscreen team. Everyone who was in one way or another involved in the filming of "Give Oak in Yuba County" enjoyed the atmosphere of friendliness and mutual assistance.

“I literally fell in love with the script and was thrilled to work with Tate,” says costume designer Olga Mill (Reincarnation, Diary of a Shepherd). - I started reading the script and could not tear myself away until I finished! For a character as interesting as Sue Buttons, it's really fun to pick a wardrobe. At first I decided on the color scheme, and my first visual reference for Sue was (no matter how rude it may sound) the color and feel of the chewing gum that you have been chewing for a very, very long time! This metaphor haunted me. So when I sent the buyers to the shops, I asked them to look closely at things that look like chewing gum that has lost its taste."

The colorful characters of the film themselves pushed Mill to unexpected creative discoveries, and the actresses playing these roles actively participated in creating their characters' wardrobes.

“It often happens that you have some kind of understanding of a character, according to which you are trying to choose a wardrobe, but then something happens or you meet someone, and the original idea no longer seems original to you, you have to change something, - explains Mill.

While working on the character of Nancy, played by Mila Kunis, we found a YouTube video about some provincial journalist from Texas who is busy processing news. The girl was wearing regular office clothes, so we decided to change Mila's image. Nancy turned into a business girl with a good salary. This spoke eloquently about her character.

Regina Hall, who played Police Detective Harris, suggested using a wig made by our makeup artist Colin LaBuff. We really wanted to distance ourselves from the polished "detective in a skirt" image, so in our version, detective Harris became less glamorous and more realistic."

The actors and specialists of the offscreen team brilliantly coped with their work and helped their colleagues on the set work.

About cameraman Christina Voros (Ma, When I Was Dying, Yellowstone) Norris says: “Christina manages to keep the whole plot in her memory and knows which scene will follow which in the narrative line. She not only deals with lenses and light, but has an idea of what she will have to deal with during editing, and this greatly facilitated Tate's work. She is simply phenomenal in her approach to work and her overall understanding of the filming process."

“I wanted to create characters whose adventures would be fun to follow,” says Idoko. “Regina and Allison did a great job with their roles, especially when the cat and mouse game started. Wanda Sykes can literally read the phone book and it will still be funny! Whenever she appeared in the frame, I could not help but laugh."
