What is usually asked of a person who mentions an upcoming vacation? Regardless of the age, religion and gender of the questioner, first of all, as a rule, he is interested in - and with whom are you traveling? With a friend, a company, a man of your life, parents, in the end … any answer will work, but only one is almost guaranteed to make your interlocutor raise an eyebrow inquiringly - as one, all alone? And what's wrong with that?

No, if you cannot imagine yourself without constant communication, if you are categorically afraid of being alone in a foreign city or country, and if only circumstances in the form of relatives or friends who unexpectedly refused to go push you on a trip alone, it’s probably better to leave this idea. If you are not alien to adventurism, if you want to change the environment and take a break from the usual roles and responsibilities, perhaps traveling alone is exactly what the doctor ordered. Here are some of the possible advantages and disadvantages of such a trip.

pros

You don't have to coordinate your plans with anyone. Once we were choosing a gift for a friend of five: it took three times as long to buy a watch than we expected, and we were very late for the party. On trips, the same thing often happens: even if people are connected by close relationships, their wishes regarding ways of spending their leisure time may not coincide. One wants to go shopping, another would prefer to sit quietly and chat in a cafe, the third is not afraid to stand in a kilometer-long queue to the Uffizi Gallery or the Vatican … Coordination can be very, very difficult.

If you have highly specialized interests that none of your friends shares, and you don’t want to go with strangers, then you will not be bored in a place where you can delve into your hobby. Maybe you have always wanted to become a wine taster and are going to Paris to study the intricacies of wine, or you are interested in the history of ancient civilizations and dream of getting to South America to see with your own eyes where the legendary Incas lived … Personally, I take pictures and I suspect that not everyone it is interesting to follow me through the back streets and entrances of a foreign city in search of interesting stories.

Useful Tips

Limit yourself to a minimum of things - no one will carry them for you.

Think over your options on how to while away the travel time in the waiting rooms (take a book, a player).

If you are going to walk a lot, take a guidebook with you, immediately buy a map upon arrival and plan your route.

If you plan to travel within the country / region, if possible, study the schedule in advance and redeem all tickets.

Do not walk in a strange city at night.

Think over your budget - if anything, there will be no one to borrow money. But try to take a credit card with you, on which your family can put money for you if necessary.

Do not plan actions that you do poorly on your own (say, if you absolutely need an advisor for shopping).

Take with you a boiler, tea / coffee and dry cereals / a couple of snacks. When you are alone in the room in the evening, you can feel lonely - a mug of your favorite hot drink and something for a snack will help to recreate the home atmosphere.

If you miss home, buy souvenirs for your family and friends - this is the best relaxation.

Turn on roaming, but make sure you don't run out of money on your account. The mobile phone is your only means of emergency operational communication.

Don't keep documents and money in one place. Banal advice, but in a situation of a single trip, it is especially important not to be left without a livelihood and without documents at the same time.

The beauty of relaxation is in small, spontaneous decisions that make you feel truly free. Buy ice cream or not buy, go to a disco or not. What if you become unbearably lazy to get up at 6 am for an excursion, and you decide to cancel everything, and your fellow traveler is already tuned in to the cultural program and does not want to fry an extra day on a hotel deck chair? If you are traveling alone, conflicts on the basis of a sudden change of plans cannot arise by definition.

Solo travel is a great way to get away from people and finally connect with yourself. In the morning we run to work, in the evening we have other things to do, and happy is the one who manages to find half an hour of solitude among all this whirlwind in order to put in order scattered thoughts. And a meditative place like Valaam or Solovki, and the noisy jungle of a restless big city, where no one knows you, equally dispose to dissolve in the world around you and relax.

If at the same time you do not shy away from interesting acquaintances, keep in mind: the likelihood of acquiring them significantly increases when you are alone. Last summer I went to London for a few days. It seems that during these days more handsome and charming men tried to get to know me than during the whole summer in Moscow. Among them were such colorful characters as a businessman in the City, a Negro policeman in Trafalgar Square, a tour guide near Buckingham Palace, a writer near Westminster Abbey, and a DJ in a Piccadilly hostel. After chatting with everyone, I went on walking alone - in London it is not customary to impose your company on a person.

Finally, having left where no one knows you, you can completely or partially change the boring image. Do you want to do some non-standard act, for example, sing your favorite song on the central boulevard with a guitar or sunbathe on a nudist beach, but feel shy about familiar faces? In a strange city, no one will tell about this to those whose reaction you fear.

Minuses

If you are traveling alone, there is no one to share your enthusiasm and anxieties with, except with the help of mobile communications. You will experience all the impressions alone, putting aside detailed stories until you arrive home. You will have no one to consult with which swimsuit will emphasize your figure better and where it is more profitable to change money. You will have to rely only on your experience and communication skills.

You will have no one to rely on in the event of a dangerous or extreme situation, you will solve all problems yourself and only yourself. However, with insurance, you will always be provided with urgent medical assistance. Variants of the system "one stays with things, the other goes for reconnaissance" automatically disappear - you will have to keep track of your belongings alone.

Living alone is more expensive - a single room per person is cheaper by default than a double or triple room. The exception is the beds in hostels - that's where it really doesn't matter how many of you travel, all the same, about six people live in each room.

If you rent a car, you will not be able to change at the wheel. You will be both a driver and a passenger in one person. In addition, you will also think over the route, make all the necessary inquiries and communicate with the locals, no one will replace you.

There are many places where it is not recommended to travel alone. These are, for example, religious Islamic countries (in secular states it is possible - Turkey, for example, is safe for Russian women, although they cannot avoid increased male attention). At sea - there is simply nothing to do alone, except that you can count on the fact that a suitable company will gather on the spot. It makes sense to go to the generally recognized romantic cities (Prague, Paris, Venice) alone, if, say, you enjoy sitting alone in a cafe. Otherwise, there is a great risk of getting bored.

Where is it worth going? For example, to large and interesting cities (New York, London, Rome). There you will find a variety of activities and entertainment for every taste, from museums to outdoor swimming pools and organ concerts in ancient chapels. To places of interest: party-goers - to Ibiza or Goa, animal lovers - to national parks, pilgrims - to the monasteries of the Pskov province. Alone, you can improve your health and appearance in the SPA - it's nice to do without unnecessary witnesses. Finally, you can go on a hike with a good travel club - they will take care of you there, and you won't have to persuade your friends to go with you.

As you can see, it's okay that you will spend your coming vacation alone, no. Good luck and good road!
