When going to a new country, we often read about its traditional dishes in order to try something special. But we rarely think about breakfast, and breakfast is almost the main dish of the day! Together with HomeToGo, an expert in finding accommodation around the world, we have prepared a study on how foreigners imagine breakfast and what they actually eat in different European countries.

So, 17% of foreigners thought that breakfast in Russia starts with vodka - although this, of course, looks more like a joke. 3% of foreigners believe that Russian breakfast is not complete without caviar. It would be nice! In Poland, according to the respondents, it is also customary to start the day with vodka (5%). Other stereotypes include beer in Germany and sausages in Austria for breakfast. How are things really going?

Breakfast in France

In the case of France, the stereotypes turned out to be close to reality: a typical French breakfast is a baguette or croissant, either plain or with jam.

Chocolate rolls are also often eaten for breakfast, and, of course, it is washed down with coffee.

Breakfast in Italy

Breakfast in Italy is always sweet! Contrary to expectations, pizza is rarely eaten in the morning, and the traditional Italian breakfast consists of sweet pastries (for example, a cake or a sweet roll), Italian biscotti biscuits are also very popular.

In the morning, Italians drink espresso, and a little later at breakfast - cappuccino.

Breakfast in Germany

Despite stereotypes, hot dogs and cold cuts are not your typical breakfast in Germany (the exception is Bavaria with its white sausages).

Usually Germans eat toast or sandwiches with cheese, ham or jam, as well as hard-boiled eggs. Favorite drink - coffee with milk.

Breakfast to Spain

A survey of foreigners showed that a Spanish breakfast can be anything, including paella. This is not far from the truth: paella is certainly not eaten, but breakfast can vary significantly depending on the region.

The most traditional option is bread with tomatoes and butter, which is usually eaten with ham and washed down with coffee and orange juice.

Breakfast in Austria

The Austrian breakfast is more like Italian than German: it is also sweet and includes croissants or bread and jam, and the favorite drink of the Austrians, of course, is coffee.

The British, on the other hand, eat a very hearty breakfast known as full breakfast. It includes scrambled eggs, fried bacon, sausage (or sausages), mushrooms and tomatoes, fried beans and buttered toast … A real calorie bomb!

The Polish breakfast is full and high-calorie; it most often involves cottage cheese, eggs, vegetables, various sandwiches made from rye bread and sausages. This breakfast is washed down with hot black tea.

During our research, we learned interesting facts about breakfast throughout Europe. For example, the average Frenchman spends 22 minutes on breakfast (while in the Austrian Alps it can take about an hour for breakfast), while the average person in the Netherlands consumes about 60 kg of bread a year. In Italy, it is not customary to eat cheese, ham or eggs for breakfast - only sweet pastries, in Greece they drink iced coffee, and in Lithuania they can serve beet soup for breakfast in the summer.
