In addition to pests, potatoes are susceptible to all kinds of diseases, one of the most common is late blight. To reap a good harvest, you need to know how to deal with such a scourge with the help of folk remedies and chemistry.

Signs of the disease

The plant is susceptible to disease during the budding period. Rapidly growing brown spots on the lower leaves are a serious concern. First they turn black, then the stems dry up and die off.

With increased moisture in the soil, a whitish bloom forms on the back of the leaf. Coarse gray plaques appear on the tubers; under them, when cut, clear necrosis is visible, extending into the depths of the tuber.

For the reproduction and vital activity of the fungal disease of the genus Phytophthora infestans, a certain environment is required - frequent local rains, alternating with sunny weather in the middle of the day, as well as cold nights and abundant dew. Mycelium spores are transferred from a diseased plant to healthy bushes by midges and wind.

How to deal with late blight on potatoes

Manifestations of signs of disease on potatoes can be observed at the beginning of the season and, if nothing is done, then all summer. The pathogenic process will go into the soil, will begin to actively infect the tubers - this is fraught with rotting potatoes already in the ground.

Preventive measures must be taken to prevent disease. If the process has begun, you need to know how to deal with late blight. In addition to chemical fungicides, folk remedies with a similar effect have proven themselves well.

Outdoor chemicals

At the first signs of the disease, it is necessary to urgently process the plant, preventing the further spread of the disease. There are two types of fungicides - contact and systemic.

The cost of the former is significantly lower, but it must be taken into account that even minor precipitation will nullify all efforts. Processing will have to be done at least 6 times.

Systemic drugs are more expensive but reliable. Experienced agronomists recommend a number of fungicides, consider them.

Consento

Therapeutic effect, the drug protects the plant from various infections. It is recommended to be used for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes at different stages of the development of the disease.

Benefits of the drug:

  • has proven itself well in the fight against late blight at different stages of plant disease, regardless of the stage of growth;
  • fast-acting, long-lasting effect;
  • minimal addiction of the pathogen to the agent;
  • does not wash off when watering and lingering rains.

Infinito

The systemic fungicide contains flupikolide, propamocarb and hydrochloride. The penetration of active substances into the plant through the intercellular spaces inevitably leads to the death of zoospores and the development of mycelium.

At the same time, propamocarb hydrochloride is responsible for stimulating growth. The effect of the drug lasts about two weeks, it all depends on the weather conditions and the neglect of the disease.

Pros:

  • the drug has a short-term toxic effect;
  • absolutely harmless to inhabitants of reservoirs, birds, bees, earthworms;
  • has a positive effect on potato yield.

Quadris

A synthetic preparation made in Switzerland has a destructive effect on the fungus, preventing further spread. A broad-spectrum agent actively fights against all mushrooms, with the exception of useful ones.

Positive traits:

  • does not accumulate in leaves and fruits, therefore, does not harm the environment;
  • harmless to beneficial soil microflora and its inhabitants;
  • goes well with other biological preparations aimed at increasing soil fertility;
  • being both a contact and systemic drug, after treatment the agent turns into an indelible film.

Energodar-Ukravit

New fungicide. The complex combines growth-stimulating and protective substances against a number of dangerous diseases. The need to use a Ukrainian-made drug arises when time is lost and preventive measures are useless.

Benefits of the tool:

  • enhances plant immunity, acts as a growth stimulant;
  • addiction of pathogens to the drug was not found;
  • reliably protects untreated parts of the plant and new growth;
  • ease of use throughout the vegetative period.

When using any of the drugs for prophylactic or therapeutic purposes, you must act according to the instructions, observing each point.

Fighting late blight on potatoes with folk remedies

Phytophthora on potatoes makes gardeners worry. Experienced vegetable growers know how to deal with the problem and, despite the assurances of manufacturers regarding the safety of modern chemicals, they try to do with folk remedies.

But they are effective only for preventive purposes, if the situation is not running. Until the disease has spread, you need to spray the tops with a special infusion prepared according to one of the following recipes.

  1. Garlic. Grind 1.5 kg of garlic in any convenient way. Fill with water in the amount of three liters and leave for five days. After the time has elapsed, add another 10 liters of water, 1 gram of manganese and 50 grams of soap, with its help the solution will stick well. Spray the potatoes with the prepared solution once every two weeks.
  2. Horsetail. Fill 2 kg of raw materials with 10 liters of water. We insist for 4 days, after which we spray once a week. Silicon contained in the solution, in addition to the main functions aimed at protecting potatoes from late blight, is a good top dressing.
  3. Serum with water. Another very simple recipe to continue the topic of how to deal with pathogens not with chemistry, but with folk remedies. We dilute both components in a ratio of 1 to 1. Unlike other preparations of our own production, this one can be used more often.
  4. With an antiprotozoal antibacterial drug. Dissolve 10 tablets in 10 liters of water, infuse the liquid for 5-7 days, spray the potatoes no more than once a week.

Processing potato bushes with ash will definitely not be superfluous. As you know, non-combustible residues of mineral impurities are a good plant nutrition. In addition, it has a detrimental effect on pathogens.

The main condition for processing plants is the absence of heat. Early morning or late evening is the best time. It is important that the solution does not have time to dry and is properly absorbed into the sheet, starting to act purposefully.

Preventive measures

To grow a rich harvest of tasty and healthy potatoes, you must adhere to simple rules:

  1. Observe the rotation of crops - exclude the planting of various nightshades in one place.
  2. Give preference to varieties of your favorite vegetable that are resistant to late blight. Among them: Eaglet, Nevsky, Batya, Nakhodka, Luck and others.
  3. Do not plant tomatoes in close proximity to potatoes.
  4. Create beds for potatoes where corn, legumes or cereals previously grew.
  5. For planting potatoes, flat terrain is best suited; it is better to avoid areas with stagnant water.
  6. In order to protect the bushes from infection, it is necessary to spill them in a timely manner, as well as remove weeds.
  7. Spray potatoes without waiting for the first signs of the disease to appear.
  8. After harvesting, burn all the tops.

Phytophthora on potatoes is a serious problem. In order not to have to look for methods of how to deal with this ailment, for preventive purposes it is worth treating with industrial chemistry or folk remedies.
