Many have heard about separate feeding. But most people have a very vague idea of what it is. Numerous diets based on the principles of separate nutrition are very different from what the author of this system, Herbert Shelton, saw as an ideal menu. Let's remember his approach.

What is the meaning of separate meals?

Many nutritionists recommend eating a variety of foods, that is, eating a wide variety of foods at one time and thus providing the body with a whole range of nutrients. However, they overlook the process of assimilating food: how the body reacts to the intake of different types of food.

The fact is that the enzymes necessary for the digestion of one type of food interfere with the assimilation of another. For example, enzymes needed to digest protein interfere with the digestion of carbohydrates, and enzymes needed to break down carbohydrates interfere with protein absorption.

When incompatible foods are found in the stomach, the food begins to ferment and spoil. As a result, you are not getting all the proteins, minerals, and vitamins that are nominally found in food. Only a small part of them is absorbed, and the body is clogged with metabolic products.

"Heartburn, belching, flatulence in the intestines, as well as chronic runny nose and cough - these are all the consequences of poor nutrition!" That is, all because of the use of incompatible products with each other, Shelton was sure.

Thus, the meaning of separate nutrition is to save a person from fermentation and spoilage of food inside the body.

Incompatible products

Let's figure out which products cannot be combined with each other.

Proteins and carbohydrates

Meat, eggs, cheese, nuts and legumes cannot be eaten at the same time as potatoes, cereals (bread, pasta, etc.), as well as sweet fruits. That is, supporters of separate nutrition do not approve of such a classic dish as pasta or mashed potatoes with a cutlet.

However, there are foods that are poorly absorbed by themselves, because they include both proteins and carbohydrates: for example, legumes. They are 50% starch, i.e. carbohydrates, and 25% from protein.

There are foods that are poorly digestible on their own because they include both protein and carbohydrates, such as legumes.

Sugar and starch

Bread and jam, pies with sweet fillings, gingerbread, cookies, muffins, pilaf with raisins … We used to consider these products unhealthy due to the high content of fast carbohydrates, now there is another reason to limit their use: the combination of sugar and starch they contain causes fermentation in the stomach.

Proteins and fats

Do not combine the intake of butter and vegetable oil, as well as cream with meat, eggs, cheese, nuts and other proteins.

Proteins and proteins

Each type of protein requires different enzymes for its assimilation, so you should not eat meat, eggs, cheese, nuts together.

Starches and starches

The consumption of two types of starch will most likely lead to an excess of its norm. In this case, fermentation will also begin, so this combination should be excluded from the diet.

Acids and starches

Starchy foods (bread, potatoes, legumes, sweet fruits) should not be eaten with acidic foods (citrus fruits, pineapples, kiwi, tomatoes).

Acid and protein

You should not eat sour fruits along with meat, eggs, cheese, nuts. Acids interfere with the absorption of proteins.

Melons and watermelons with other food

All fruits should be eaten separately from other types of food, but this is especially true for melons and watermelons. Fruits themselves are absorbed very quickly, but if they are mixed with other foods, they begin to ferment and cannot leave the stomach for a long time.

Milk and dairy products with other food

Shelton is convinced that milk should either be consumed separately or completely excluded from the diet. Milk is a food, not a drink, so you need to drink it in small sips, holding it in your mouth so that it mixes with saliva. Any product mixed with milk begins to ferment. Milk porridge, considered by some nutritionists to be healthy breakfasts, is not really digested and starts to spoil in the stomach. Porridge with sugar or fruit is also not digestible, so if there is porridge, then without any sweet additives and milk.

How does Shelton's approach differ from the popular diets today?

Nowadays, you can often hear about diets based on separate nutrition than about the actual separate nutrition. According to Shelton, separate meals are not a weight loss diet, but a way to stay healthy. Also, the famous nutritionist had an original view of what foods to eat and what not. Let's see how Shelton felt about different food products.

The meat cannot be fresh by definition, since after the death of the animal, it immediately begins to decompose, and it contains poisons

Meat

Meat is one of the most harmful foods. It is a mistake to believe that it compensates for the body's protein deficiency - it contains much more protein than the stomach can digest, Shelton was sure. In addition, meat cannot be fresh by definition, since after the death of an animal, it immediately begins to decompose, and it contains poisons. And if you add to this those substances that are given to animals to stimulate growth and gain muscle mass, that is, it becomes simply dangerous.

Eggs

Eggs should also be eliminated from food because they are difficult to digest.

Dairy products

Shelton believed that milk is intended for feeding babies, and the body of an adult is not adapted for its assimilation. And milk that is sold in stores should not be drunk at all.

Nuts

Fats and proteins contained in nuts are absorbed much better than in other foods. In terms of protein value, nuts are not inferior to meat. When digested, they form acid, but to a much lesser extent than meat.

Cereals

Whole grains are much better than those made with refined white flour, Shelton said, but they should be limited as even when eaten alone, they are poorly digestible and generally not chemically balanced.

Fruits

Like many other naturopaths, Shelton believed that fresh fruits are the ideal food: they are quickly digested, have high energy and nutritional value, and at the same time they cleanse the body. Whole fruits are healthier than juice. Jams made from fruits and berries are only harmful. It is best to eliminate them completely from the diet.

Vegetables and greens

Vegetables and greens are very healthy foods. Interestingly, the tops of plants such as carrots, beets, radishes contain more nutrients than root crops.

Honey

Shelton did not recommend eating honey, since in combination with starchy and protein foods, as well as fruits, it causes the same fermentation as refined sugar.

Salt

At the time Shelton began to popularize his theory, it was probably not yet known that plants contain sodium, but they already knew that salt is sodium chloride. Nevertheless, even then he was convinced that the "natural salt" contained in vegetables and herbs is much better than the white crystals of inorganic salt. Shelton came to the conclusion that the body does not need pure salt at all.
