Autumn is a rainy season. And you need to protect yourself from the rain fully armed - you need to make the umbrella your constant companion. If suddenly you haven’t found your perfect umbrella yet, we will help - these are the main rules on how to choose the best one.
Choosing an umbrella by mechanism
According to the mechanism, the umbrella can be mechanical (it opens and closes manually), semi-automatic (you need to press the button when opening the dome), automatic (press the button, and the umbrella opens completely by itself), with a double automatic (the umbrella opens and closes by pressing button).
Choosing an umbrella by type
If the umbrella has a lot of folds, it breaks faster.
By type, umbrellas are divided into folding and walking sticks.
The most durable umbrellas are recognized as walking sticks. These umbrellas have a large canopy that protects well from rain. But such an umbrella cannot be put in a bag, and it is inconvenient in transport.
Folding umbrellas are more practical: they are smaller in size and can be carried in a bag. Choose an umbrella with two folds - when an umbrella has a lot of folds, it quickly looses and breaks.
Ideally, it is better to have both types of umbrellas - for all occasions.
Choosing an umbrella by material
When choosing an umbrella, ask the seller what the umbrella is made of.
Its frame and spokes (the optimal number of spokes is from 8 to 16) should be strong and slightly flexible. The optimal material is fiberglass, it is not very heavy, it can withstand gusts of wind well. The steel is strong, but increases the weight of the umbrella.
The canopy is made of nylon, polyester, pongee or Teflon-impregnated polyester. Nylon models are cheap, but they also save on quality. Nylon “shrinks” over time after drying, and its colors may lose their former brightness.
The most common umbrella material is polyester. He (like his paints) is resistant to light. Sometimes cotton is added to polyester, which makes the fabric softer and more natural (but these umbrellas are more expensive).
Pongee - cotton or silk fabric with a rough surface - practically does not absorb moisture and dries quickly.
Choosing an umbrella by quality
If all the other parameters suit you, it remains to check the quality of the umbrella.
Open and close the umbrella several times to make sure its mechanism works.
The main thing is to check the quality of the umbrella before buying.
Check how well the fabric is stretched to see if it sags too much.
Check the spokes (they should be the same length, not sticking out from the edges) and how the dome is attached to the rod.
Try the handle for how comfortable and secure it is. Also, the handle should be comfortable in the palm of your hand. An umbrella with a hook handle is more convenient to hang and can be used as a walking stick. Umbrellas with a wooden handle will cost you a little more than a plastic one.
