Varicose veins are one of the most common ailments in modern society. It is no coincidence that varicose veins are called "the disease of civilization" - more than half of the world suffers from it! Alexander Albitsky, deputy chief physician and practicing vascular surgeon at the MEDSI Clinical and Diagnostic Center on Belorusskaya, talks about the most modern technologies for combating the disease.

Women suffer from varicose veins three times more often than men. Among them, problems with veins on the legs are tormented by 60%, while in men - only 20%. Moreover, the main danger of varicose veins is not aesthetic, but purely medical. Having started the disease, you can deal a big blow to your health! How to restore the legs to their former beauty painlessly and without surgery? Let's tell.

There are several reasons for the occurrence of varicose veins - it can be the specifics of work, lifestyle, heredity and even pregnancy. If earlier varicose veins were considered a disease of the older generation, now about 20% of adolescents are sick with it.

Getting rid of varicose "stars" and "cobwebs" forever is the dream of everyone who is familiar with this disease.

Getting rid of varicose "stars" and "cobwebs" forever is the dream of everyone who is familiar with this disease. In the hot summer months and on holidays, shorts, skirts, swimsuits cause discomfort for many. But, of course, it's not just about beauty.

Veins are the most important network of branched vessels that carry blood from tissues to the heart. Venous blood supply in the legs goes through the deep and superficial veins. In this case, the main load falls on the deep ones - only 15% of the work gets to the superficial. Part of the venous blood against gravity makes its way to the heart only with the help of the leg muscles - when walking, running, squatting. In a relaxed state and a sedentary lifestyle, the blood stagnates in the legs, the veins expand and become inflamed. This leads to a violation of the blood supply to the limbs and provokes varicose veins.

New treatments

The traditional surgical method - phlebectomy (removal of veins) - has been around for about a century and is the most common vein surgery. Previously, during the procedure, the surgeon made long incisions along the entire length of the leg. Modern phlebectomy involves two incisions and is an atraumatic operation. However, it remains the surgical and most radical intervention in the treatment of venous disease.

Today, medicine offers modern, gentle methods, thanks to which it is possible to cure varicose veins without performing a single incision. For example, methods of radiofrequency and laser ablation of veins. But the most effective of the so-called "office" technologies is endovenous laser ablation (coagulation). In simple terms, this is an intravascular surgery to clog the venous canal.

The most effective of the so-called "office" technologies is endovenous laser ablation (coagulation).

The non-surgical EVLA technique was discovered in 1999 by the talented Spanish cardiovascular surgeon Carlos Bone. Two years later, this revolutionary method has gained a strong position in American medicine. At the moment, almost 70% of patients with varicose veins in the world are treated in this way.

Determination of indications and contraindications is carried out using ultrasound. The most modern preoperative diagnosis of veins using ultrasound is angiography. A phlebologist measures the diameter of the saphenous veins at several levels - the patient must be in an upright position.

Through a micro-puncture, thin optical fibers are inserted into the vein, through which the laser is delivered under ultrasound control. Moving along the venous vessel, the laser interacts with biological tissues and a local release of heat occurs. Under its influence, the lumen of the diseased vein closes, and subsequently it dissolves without a trace.

Different wavelengths allow you to deal with the affected veins of different thicknesses. One of the few limitations for performing EVLA is the impressive diameter of the great saphenous vein trunk. Nevertheless, this method is almost 100% effective and is used for the vast majority of patients with varicose veins. The procedure takes 1-2 hours and does not require hospitalization.

The best treatment is prevention

As you know, preventing a disease is much easier than curing it. Varicose veins are no exception. To avoid the development of varicose veins, follow a few simple rules.

  • Say no to tight and uncomfortable shoes. The height of the heel should not exceed 4-5 cm. Leave the hairpins for the holidays - walking on them all day is very harmful for the legs.
  • Tight tight clothing with tight belts and elastic bands also contributes to the development of varicose veins.
  • Get rid of the habit of sitting cross-legged. In this case, the veins are pinched and blood circulation slows down.
  • At sea, outdoors and at home - go barefoot more. Pebbles and sand are especially helpful.
  • For the prevention of varicose veins, any sport in which the lower leg is evenly reduced is useful. This is cycling, swimming, jogging.
  • Get rid of the habit of sitting cross-legged. In this case, the veins are pinched and blood circulation slows down.
  • Watch your figure and eat right - excess weight increases the pressure on your legs.

The most important rule is to consult a specialist in a timely manner when the first symptoms appear and not bring the disease to a severe stage.

Commentary by Alexander Albitsky, Deputy Chief Physician for Surgery, Clinical and Diagnostic Center MEDSI on Belorusskaya, Ph. D.:

“For many in our country, varicose veins have become the norm. Even after realizing the problem, people are in no hurry to see a doctor on time. The reason is in the stereotype that the treatment of varicose veins is a long and painful process. And in vain! Modern medicine treats varicose veins without pain and long-term rehabilitation. Innovative technologies allow the patient to be discharged within a few hours after the operation and return to the usual rhythm of life in the shortest possible time. Treatment of this level can only be afforded by leading clinics. We are faced with such operations every day."
