The art of firing

All personnel officers, as one, insist that the desire to "slam the door" before leaving work arises much more often in us women than in men. "Why?" - you ask. Perhaps this is due to our impulsiveness, the habit of saying everything that you think to our face or our inability to hide our feelings. Of course, sometimes these qualities are good for you, but not in cases of dismissal and looking for a new job. Here you have to be, first of all, a professional, and feelings should be left behind the door of the office and study.

Recently I had the following incident at my company: a young man came to get a job. Sergey made an excellent impression on both the management and the employees of the company. Nice looks, stylish suit, good resume and work experience - everything seems to be with him. The authorities were already ready to make him an offer. But at the last moment, it turned out that Sergei quit his previous job with such a scandal that he was remembered not only by the directors of the company, but also by the ordinary manager, who now worked for us and provided this information. It was not difficult to check it by calling the phone number indicated in the resume - unpleasant details came to light. Sergei not only left, "slamming the door", but also set up his colleagues, and did not bring the project, which he was leading, to the end. Perhaps Sergey will be lucky elsewhere, but they never took him to us.

Conclusion: scandals and quarrels will not bring anything good to your career, especially if you plan to further climb the career ladder and achieve success in life.

Even with a very bad employer, one must part ways amicably. Not everyone thinks about the fact that life can bring us back to our former colleagues, and this happens very often. Take, for example, football clubs, whose players change from one job to another several times per season. And they practically do not have any conflict situations when parting. After all, both sides know that life can bring them together again.

Today's business world is an extremely transparent structure, and if you are a good specialist, be sure that they know about your existence. So think a hundred times before going to the authorities with your complaints. Now in many recruiting agencies there is such a thing as a "black list". Unscrupulous workers who left large companies with some unfinished projects, thefts, etc. end up there.

By the way, more and more employers notice some kind of loss after the departure of the next employee. Do you think this only happens in films and soap operas? Not at all. A case from life: in the process of collecting recommendations for one new employee, it turned out that he had left the previous place, taking with him a printer, a fax and a couple of other little things. Don't stoop to such things!

How can you leave the company so that all its employees remember you as an excellent specialist, colleague and just a good person?

Council number 1. You should warn about your dismissal at least 2 weeks before leaving. This period is determined by the legislation. During this time, they will find a replacement for you, thus protecting yourself from possible work stoppages. If a new specialist is found quickly, you should prepare and transfer all the cases to him and bring him up to date. If you can find a candidate for your own place - even better! This is considered good form in many companies.

Think ahead of time about the speech you are going to give to your boss. Tell us about what your work here taught you and that you are very grateful to them for everything - then the impressions about you will remain the most favorable.

Council number 2. Get things ready for leaving. Of course, 2 weeks is not a period for this task, because you have been working much longer, and the mood is no longer working. But it is still worth collecting and organizing the available information so that it can be understood without you. Write down all the coordinates of the customers with whom you work in a separate book, put the unfinished business in one folder and pay special attention to them for the new employee, if one has already been found, and the completed ones in others.

Council number 3. Don't keep your dismissal a secret. If you really decided to leave, then it is worth reporting this not only to your immediate supervisor and the HR department. It is worth informing all interested and dependent people: employees of your own and related departments, clients, partners and customers. If you managed to find a replacement, this person should also be introduced to all of the above persons!

Council number 4. Symbolic farewell. Almost all companies have a friendly atmosphere. If you have the same, you can arrange a small tea party, a picnic, a trip to a cafe. Of course, this will not be a holiday as such, either for you or for your colleagues, but it will help smooth out all the rough edges and leave only a pleasant impression of you.

If it is not customary for you to set the table, an option with small souvenirs "for memory" for colleagues is possible. For example, a girl, Elena, recently quit my department. On the last day, she presented almost all employees with small souvenirs, and for each one of her own was invented, corresponding to the position, character, habits or appearance of a person. Everyone received an email that day saying goodbye to Elena. It said that she was extremely pleased to work in our company and with such a team, wishes of good luck and prosperity.

We still remember Lena as a really good and valuable employee for the company, whom they simply could not keep.

Of course, if you are too temperamental and your attitude towards your boss is extremely negative, then you have the right to express your thoughts and feelings, especially if there is a certainty that you will never see each other again.

It seems to me that you can "slam the door" only in a few cases. For example, if you have great charm, charisma and at the same time you are a professional in your field, then, with all the desire of the boss to form a bad opinion of you, colleagues will still stand behind you and will always give only positive recommendations. Perhaps they will even follow you. This, for example, happened back in 2004 on the NTV channel when the management of the television company changed. First, Leonid Parfenov left the TV channel. Then Irina Bliznyuk, Evgeny Maslov and Ekaterina Golovina followed after him. It cannot be argued that these changes are associated only with the desire of the workers themselves to change their place of work. Nevertheless, the departure of Leonid Parfenov influenced the opinions and thoughts of many colleagues "in the shop".

Another scandal erupted on the Rossiya TV channel in 2005. Then the newspapers were full of headlines about the loud departure of Elena Masyuk. In an interview with Radio Liberty, the TV journalist said that her decision to leave was due to the refusal of the channel's management to broadcast her programs.

2006, of course, is no exception in terms of scandalous layoffs among celebrities. More recently, it became known that the Paramount Pictures film studio has ended all relations with the production company of Tom Cruise. The filmmaker decided not to renew the contract signed 14 years ago, saying that the actor's frivolous behavior off-screen threatens the success of future projects. But Cruz is not going to lose heart at all. Upon learning of the decision of Paramount Pictures, Tom announced that he plans to open his own studio and shoot high-budget films with sponsorship money.

And yet, remember that there are many benefits of a “nice” layoff, primarily for you and your career!

At first, it is about maintaining a good relationship. In the future, it is possible that you and the former employer become partners or colleagues. A good opinion of you will help not only to easily establish connections and contacts, but will also be an excellent impetus for mutually beneficial cooperation.

Secondly, Imagine that you are going to work for another company. Really, when you go to a new place, you will constantly scold the previous boss, tell everyone how bad it was there and reveal all the secrets of the company. It's stupid!

Thirdly, what if life turns in such a way that you want to return to the same company, but already to a higher position - so why spoil your relationship with your bosses?

And, of course, it's always nice to make new acquaintances and meet new people, but former colleagues can also play a huge role in your life if your connections with them are not lost. For example, you work in the advertising department, and the person who makes the layouts is sick. You can always call your former company and ask the person who does this for advice, at least that's what I do in such cases.

By the way, according to the new Labor Code of the Russian Federation (Article 80), the employee has the right to reverse and withdraw the application within two weeks. And your boss is obliged to agree with this, even if a new employee has already been found for your position. So - there is still time to think!
