The life of the Russian hinterland is a frequent theme in the works of Tatyana Ustinova. Throwing the hero into a distant province, surrounding him with rural flavor and vivid folk characters - all this the author, with her characteristic warmth and humor, does in the new book "Selfie with Destiny".

The village of Sokolnichye, Yaroslavl province, is a quiet place favored by tourists. Once, in broad daylight, someone kills a woman in the Narodny Craft store - the famous philanthropist Lilia Petrovna. The drunkard Petrovich, who wandered nearby, is accused of the murder, and the case is considered closed. But the director of the local house of creativity, who was friends with Lilia Petrovna, does not believe in Petrovich's guilt. From Moscow, he summons Ilya Subbotin, a physics professor who loves solving crimes at his leisure. It seems to Ilya that business is not worth a damn - you just need to talk to the locals, each of whom has seen something, find out the truth, get paid for the job and go home.

However, Ilya faces difficulties: the inhabitants of Sokolnichy, so simple at first glance, hide many secrets - and are not at all going to share them with the visiting professor. In order to find out which secrets are related to the murder and which are not, Ilya will have to unravel them all.

“Who is hiding behind the mask, friend or foe? Or not a friend or an enemy, but just swanky village mummers, and the masks are worked out so-so, in a hurry, and soon the straw hair will fall off and the papier-mâché noses will come off?.. - this question haunts the hero throughout the book.

But he himself is in no hurry to open up to people. "Are you a writer?" - they ask him. “A writer,” agrees Subbotin. "You are a liar" - provoke him to frankness. “Maybe he’s a liar,” Ilya is in no hurry to argue. After all, what difference does it make to what others think? He himself thinks only of business. About the case - and for some reason about the amazing eyes of her new acquaintance … What is she hiding?
