Video: Suspiria 2018 - not a sight for everyone
2024 Author: James Gerald | [email protected]. Last modified: 2024-01-12 17:37
On November 29, 2018, the film Suspiria was released on Russian screens, immediately collecting conflicting reviews: the viewer either admires the depth of the interweaving of mysticism with reality, or feels disgust and overwhelming fear. This movie is definitely not for the faint of heart. It will also not be appreciated by fans of pop horror films and standard horror. But if you are ready for spectacular scenes and deep immersion in the cellars of the subconscious, Suspiria is definitely worth a look.
From the very first frames, the focus of the shooting will make you admire the dreaming picture. Every detail is thought out here: every gesture of the heroines, movement of every muscle and gaze, camera rotation and clearly built lighting effects. Even the walls are alive here …
Suspiria - what is it? Or the sight is not for everyone
The translation of the word Suspirium from Latin means "sigh", and in the context of the horror plot, Suspiria is interpreted as "Ominous breath" and "Suspicion" …
The new Suspiria (152 minutes long) is not a remake of the 1977 film by director Dario Argento, but rather an experimental spectacle. The two films cannot be compared, as Luca Guadagnino's contemporary work is a special look and a new direction in cinematography |
Even the genre of the new "Suspiria" cannot be defined as horror or horror, because the picture does not hesitate to be truly scary and at the same time beautiful and mysterious.
In addition, the film has its own Twitter account, where Suspiria is really alive … Here you can find out all her secrets:
- How the most terrifying scenes were created;
- Fan art: cosplay, T-shirts, jokes, slogans, etc.;
- Film crew and director interview;
- Real reviews from viewers;
- The latest news about the actors;
- Differences between the new film and the creation of Dario Argento and much more.
The rating of the picture on Rottentomatoes is 6.7 / 10, on Kinopoisk - 7.1 / 10. Walter Fasano was in charge of editing.
Since childhood, Luca dreamed of taking a new look at the 1977 Suspiria. Even as a boy, he was fascinated by a horror poster pasted on an abandoned cinema. Even then, the future director fantasized about the credits of the new Suspiria with his name.
The main roles in the cult Italian horror movie 1977 were played by the following actors:
- Jessica Harper (Susie);
- Joanne Bennett (Madame Blank);
- Stefania Casini (Sarah);
- Flavio Bucci (Daniel);
- Alida Valley (Miss Tanner);
- Udo Kier (Dr. Mandel);
- Barbara Magnolfi (Olga);
- Eva Aksen (Pat Hingle) and others.
The premiere screening of the film took place on September 1 at the Venice Film Festival, and the release date in Russia is November 29. The 2018 movie features an in-depth storyline, extended frames, and hypnotic visuals. Guadagnino found more things to explore, so his 1977 interpretation of Suspiria seems deeper and deeper. This is the national guilt, and the political situation, and the attitude towards women, and even the theme of love.
While watching, you feel like a participant in a mystical interactive or hyper-realistic computer game. Immersion is one hundred percent not only due to special effects and computer graphics, it is dances that are introduced into a certain state of the viewer, revealing the depths of the human psyche.

Movie soundtrack by Thom Yorke - special ominous rhythm
"Suspiria" by Luca Guadagnho inspired Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke to write the whole album "Suspirium", because after creating the soundtrack for the film, he appeared.
Tom admits that the most difficult thing was to write the music for the main dance in the climax of the film - the number was called Volk |
The dance, and the episode itself, had already been filmed, all that remained was to build in the musical row:
- The musician worked for a long time with the main choreographer, discussing various points related to the structure of the dance itself, dynamics and main accents. But all these other people's ideas only distracted Tom, he felt that he would not be able to create something authentic and real;
- Music must come in with a visual picture with the right contact - this is the only way to get something masterpiece. Tom could not combine it for a long time, right up to a conversation with the director Guadagnino, when he confessed that he wanted to hear something simple, pulsating and rhythmic;
- As a result, 25 different compositions were written for the film, which were included in the new album (release date - October 26).
The Radiohead frontman shared with fans a video of his performance of the acoustic version of Open Again from the soundtrack to the film.
According to the vocalist himself, the music from the film "Blade Runner" became the inspiration for the Suspiria soundtrack. At the Venice Film Festival, the film received an award for best musical accompaniment.
Fans of the musician's work can follow his life on Twitter. As Thom Yorke himself admits, he does not really like social networks, but he still keeps a blog on Twitter in his own special style.
Divided Berlin - as a backdrop for the Supernatural
The deadly red Suspiria 2018 is a film, reviews of which are pointless to read, because Guadagnino gave everyone food for thought. Berlin in 1977, divided by the wall, the post-war era of the Third Reich, daily terrorist attacks (Baader-Meinhof group) and fear hovering everywhere.
Terrorism and Nazism in Germany have not disappeared yet, and against this background, the sinister dance school really seems to be the safest place on the planet. But exactly until that moment, until you know what is going on in her basement |
The dance house is a beautiful illusion, like a reflection of that time - dark rituals, torture and lies are hidden behind dance performances, feigned emotions and public performance. The basements of the building contain even more frightening horrors and violence than the bombs and murders on the streets of post-war Berlin.
Dance will take your soul - dance tensegrity
Ritual dances, complex ligaments and jumps are the basis of the entire film. The rehearsal space is a magical connection of each member of the troupe not only with other dancers, but also with the coven of witches. The movements are more reminiscent of not dance pirouettes, but Castaneda Tensegrity, magical passes and energy exercises in a certain rhythm. The girls dance, as if in a trance, controlling their own bodies in a completely unusual way for us.
Before the filming, serious preparation was carried out - the actresses trained like real athletes, watched the diet and caught every movement of the choreographers (the ensemble of dancers was trained by Damien Jale himself). The viewer cannot fail to note the impeccable training of Dakota Johnson, who played every joint and muscle.
Breathing, rhythm of movements and the height of the actresses' jumping are the feelings and history of Suspiria. Dancers and trainers smoke all the time, while continuing to stretch and follow the production, which sets the picture in a special mood and dynamics.
The entire dance studio is based on pleasure and pain, which is clearly expressed in the choice of girls' costumes - they resemble clothes for BDSM practices: ropes, bandages, open cutouts and red.
Are all strong women witches?
The struggle of the sexes and the theme of feminism - where can we go without them in the new "Suspiria" 2018, as evidenced by the audience's reviews of the film, surprised and discouraged.
Suspiria is a feminine world where men don't belong. Strong women are often feared and branded as "witch" to devalue their strength. Director Luca Guadagnino has a radical feminist and political interpretation of Dario Argento's film |
If in the 2017 film, the dance school witches were a real evil, then in the 2018 film adaptation, their images are rethought and completely transformed.
These strong women are trying to survive and not lose their influence in difficult times of war, defending their views and the right to exist. War and terror are a reflection of masculinity and patriarchy, which became the reason that the heroines turned into real witches with cruel rituals and sacrifices. However, the era left them no other choice.
Tilda Swinton and her reincarnations
The main string in the plot was the fantastic Tilda Swinton, who played the role of the strict and mysterious Madame Blanc, the artistic director of the dance troupe. It is she who transfers the glowing energy into the hands of the young new Susie, making the dance of the student unimaginably rhythmic and plastic.
Tilda also played the role of Dr. Josef Klemper, an elderly psychoanalyst trying to get to the bottom of the truth. Although the film mainly features only women, Klemperu found a place in the plot. After all, his intentions were pure - he wanted to find the missing patient and save the girls studying within the walls of the ballet school.
The creators of the picture did not immediately admit that Swinton would appear before the audience in the male role. For a long time there were rumors that old Joseph was played by a certain Lutz Ebersdorf. Even the sculptor Josh Weston worked on the image of the actress, paying special attention to the visual aging of the skin |
Even 18 months before filming began, make-up artists began working on Tilda's image, applying test makeup: thickening the chin, reshaping the ears, mastering the lips and transforming the mouth, so that the actress could talk and move freely. After months of experimentation, the result exceeded all expectations.
And the third reincarnation of Swinton was Helena Marcos - one of the main witches of the coven, who appears only in the final episode.
Dakota Johnson and the Magic of Red
Dakota took on the role of the talented and ambitious Susie Bunnion, who came to Berlin from Ohio for her old dream: she was in love with the work of Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton) and wanted to study at an elite ballet school under her leadership.
The girl is made a member of the main troupe immediately after the audition, and then she is given the main role. Madame Blanc, and the entire leadership team, understand that Susie is not here for nothing, because unknown forces "hunted" for her since childhood, luring her into the walls of the dance institution.
The coven of witches intends to introduce the young girl into their number, preparing her body and spirit. But no one even guesses what lies behind the external, fragile and quiet American dancer.
Dakota Johnson quickly immersed herself in the preparatory process, spending many hours in rehearsals and getting to know the world of professional dance. The physical fitness of the actress is amazing: the lightness of the body, the gracefulness of movements and a special emotional color - this cannot be achieved in such a short time without daily training and full dedication.
Missing Chloe Moretz
In the new film "Suspiria" 2018, reviews of which never cease to amaze with their contradictions, Chloe played the disappeared Patricia, one of the main students of the strict Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton). The school teachers came up with a myth for the neighbors, worried about the fate of their friend, that she sympathized with the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group and fled with them.
It is in the vacated room of Patricia that the new Suzie (Dakota Johnson), who has come to conquer Berlin, is later settled.
By the way, fans of the film have the opportunity to read the very diary of Patricia, where she drew the schemes of ritual dances and revealed the secrets of the school witch teachers. Patricia has something to say … |
Tender Mia Goth
In "Suspiria" the actress (birthday November 30, 1993) played the tender Sarah Sims, one of the students of the prestigious Berlin dance school. But in real life, she never did choreography and was far from dance art, so it was especially difficult for Mia. Almost every day she trained with Dakota Johnson, spending 10 hours in the gym, because every movement and look had to be "polished to a shine."
Mia Goth is known to the viewer for the films:
- "Nymphomaniac - Part 2" (2013);
- Everest (2015);
- "Medicine for health" (2017);
- Abode of Shadows (2017);
- "High Society" (2018 - world premiere, 2019 - Russian).
Interesting Actress Facts:
- During one of the evening dinners of the film crew in Italy, Mia did not recognize Thom Yorke, the leader of the famous band Radiohead, confusing him with the actor. Afterwards she was very ashamed;
- The actress trained so hard in the dance hall for so long, working on coordination, so as not to look like a complete laughing stock. After all, all her life she considered herself awkward and awkward.
Sarah is one of the key characters in the picture, because it is she who introduces the viewer to Suzy (Dakota Johnson), and only then to the terrifying secrets of school walls and teachers.
It is she who finds the secret door in the mirrored training room, steals the sharp pin for rituals and tells Dr. Klemperer (Tilda Swinton) about all the madness. This is the moment when a complete transformation of the heroine takes place: from a naive and frivolous girl to a purposeful one who wants to get to the bottom of the truth.
Russian actress in a mysterious thriller
Our compatriot, professional dancer and choreographer Elena Fokina also took part in the new Suspiria. The actress played, probably, in the most memorable and, from the point of view of aesthetics, unpleasant episode, because it was the very first scary scene.
Here you can feel a very thin line between beautiful and terrible - Suzie's graceful dance in the rehearsal room and Olga's terrifying movements in the mirrored room.
In an interview, Elena Fokina said that the shooting took place in the winter in an abandoned hotel, in which there was not a soul since 1986. The actors and the entire team had to climb the mountain every day to continue their work within the walls of the old Art Deco building |
Incomprehensible denouement or tricks of the director
The audience reviews after watching the film Suspiria 2018 (release date in Russia - November 29) are ambiguous: the picture will force someone to wake up, and someone will plunge into the illusion even more or leave the cinema altogether, succumbing to inner fear. One of the scenes in the final episode looks like a pajama party in a mental hospital, the patients of which were allowed to invite friends and dance crazy dances. The culmination of the plot will surprise everyone, even those who are free from any expectations, and it is unlikely that it will be possible to give the film a final assessment.
When it turns out that innocent Susie is the reincarnation of the third Mother Suspiriorum, who finally decides to take power in the school by force, the viewer does not understand which won: good or evil. The director made it clear that this is a happy ending, but still the questions remain: is Susie a positive or negative character? Which is better - the old order or the unpredictable new? What happened to Madame Blanc? It is with these thoughts that you will leave the cinema …
Below you can see the trailer for the long-awaited picture in Russian. It is important to note that the film has an age limit of 18+.

I do not want to look like a mother of two children, but like a woman with a good figure. From nature, according to my ethnic characteristics, I recover even from the sight of food. For 10 years now, my main food is obscenely awful: a fish, a fish, and again a fish. You can also have grass and fruits. All the rest had to be abandoned. It is enough for me to eat a small part of the portion that my daughter eats, and I immediately blur. It is easier for Andrey and Melania (she is 4 years old).
