To understand who and why poisoned Alexei Navalny, one must recall the chronology of events and consider different versions of what happened. The oppositionist was taken to the Omsk hospital on August 20. Two days later, he was urgently taken to Germany for further treatment.
First allegations of poisoning
Navalny's headquarters began to report the deliberate poisoning immediately after his hospitalization. Therefore, the lawyers of the Anti-Corruption Foundation immediately sent a demand to open a case on the attempt on the life of a public figure.
In turn, Omsk doctors rejected this version, saying that no toxic substances were found in the body of Alexei Navalny. The chief toxicologist of the Omsk region and the Siberian Federal District, Alexander Sabaev, confirmed this information.
In his opinion, if the oppositionist had been poisoned, there would have been corresponding defeats of internal organs. But Omsk doctors did not find them.
In an editorial, Another Putin Critic Apparently Poisoned, published in The New York Times on August 23, an unknown journalist openly stated that the blame lies with the ruling elite of Russia. However, the author also believed that Putin and his entourage were responsible for the poisoning:
- retired FSB lieutenant colonel Alexander Litvinenko;
- former GRU employee Sergei Skripal;
- President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko;
- journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza;
- the representative of the group "Pussy Riot" Petr Verzilov.
Navalny's wife also believed that her husband was poisoned. Moreover, in her opinion, the Russian side deliberately did not release the patient from the hospital for 2 days in order to hide the traces of the poison.

Poisoning by "Novichok"
Continuing the development of events on September 2, Angela Merkel made a statement, telling who and why poisoned Alexei Navalny. According to the German side, the latest generation of nerve poison “Novichok” was used for the assassination attempt.
Considering that it was created during the Soviet era, suspicion fell on the Russian special services, as was the case in the Skripals case in 2018. Journalist Mikhail Gurevich expressed a similar opinion.
According to his version, the poisoning is a common puncture of the Russian security service. Due to Navalny's investigation in Tomsk, local authorities decided to get rid of the oppositionist and used a banned drug.
Blogger Alexander Yakovlev expressed the opinion that these were, rather, the actions of the American special services. According to his reflections, now Democrats are coming to power in the United States, led by Joe Biden, whose vivid anti-Russian position is widely known. Therefore, it was they who organized the assassination attempt in order to introduce a new sanctions package.
Popular journalist and TV presenter Vladimir Pozner suggested another version of what happened. He believes that the poisoning of Navalny is the least beneficial for the Russian side. Otherwise, the oppositionist would not have worked actively against the authorities for the past 15 years.
On the contrary, his work is even beneficial to the government as proof of the existence of a different point of view in the Russian Federation. But he does not see this as action by Germany. According to Vladimir Pozner, it is more likely that the guilty should be sought among the personal enemies of Alexei Anatolyevich.
Was there poison?
In fact, many questions arise regarding the very fact of poisoning. First of all, it is worth noting that so far not a single proof of the presence of poisons in the patient's body has been published. Only Angela Merkel and the German military made statements about Novichok, not doctors.
The creator of the aforementioned poison, Leonid Rink, believes that Navalny could not have been poisoned by him in any way. As evidence, he cites the following arguments:
- The "newbie" is extremely toxic. Even with the timely introduction of specific antidotes, it is very difficult to save a person's life. Therefore, Navalny had to die in Omsk.
- The first symptoms on the plane closely resemble the classic pancreatic reaction. In the case of Novichok, there must have been eye miosis and seizures. They were not there, according to eyewitnesses.
- Sudden deaths were to occur among Navalny's entourage and people at the airport. It is impossible to hit only one target with a "beginner".
Journalist and historian Nikita Yurchenko also jokes on this topic. According to him, even the Skripals' cat and guinea pig died in 2018, and this time the narrowly targeted anti-navalninsky Novichok was used.
Perhaps that is why German doctors have not yet published real evidence of the discovery of poison in Navalny's body and refused to provide it to the Kremlin. So for now, we can only guess who poisoned Navalny and why. Maybe the situation will clear up when the data on the analyzes are finally made public, or the oppositionist will come to his senses and be able to testify.
Summarize
- The most popular version of the poisoning abroad of the Russian Federation is the intervention of the Russian special services.
- The creator of Novichok believes that if Navalny was poisoned, it was clearly a different poison.
- According to Vladimir Pozner, the current situation is not beneficial to V. V. Putin and his entourage.
