With the approaching summer vacation period, many citizens are interested in when the borders will be opened to Russians in 2020 after the epidemic. The latest news about the situation in world and Russian tourism today shows that due to the coronavirus, it is impossible to plan your vacation abroad this year.

External Tourism Prospects After Coronavirus

It is already known today that earlier than other countries, those whose economy most of all depends on the tourism business are planning to open for receiving tourists. This has already been announced:

  • Italy;
  • Turkey;
  • Greece.

These countries will strive to return tourists, but, according to political scientist Dmitry Abzalov, the gradual resumption of the tourist flow to these states will begin only in the summer.

Ultimately, the expert argues, the resumption of these areas of external tourism will depend on how successfully the fight against the epidemic is carried out in those countries where the main consumers of tourism services live.

Abzalov and many other experts are inclined to believe that the tourist season is unlikely to open this summer. The countries of South America and Africa will be closed for a long time due to poorly developed medical services and high insurance risks. Travel to the United States can resume at best only in the fall, but in what month it is not known.

It is too early to talk about the recovery of the tourism industry due to the difficult epidemiological situation. Today, more than 3.5 million cases of infection have been registered in the world, of which more than 248 thousand deaths.

Most of the infected are in the following countries:

  • USA;
  • Italy;
  • Spain;
  • Great Britain;
  • France.

According to the deputy chairman of the committee of the Federation Council Valery Ryazansky, the Russians will not be able to spend their holidays abroad in 2020, since the countries have not yet opened their borders for the mass entry of foreign citizens. It is impossible to predict when this will happen.

In Russia, there is a ban on entry to the territory of the state for foreign citizens, as well as closed borders for Russians to leave. So far, European countries have closed their borders even for residents of EU member states. According to some experts, this situation in Europe may last for at least two years.

The situation in the Russian tourist market

In Russia, among other sectors of the economy, tourism has suffered the most from the coronavirus. According to Maya Lomidze, executive director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, if the borders are not opened by September, at least one third of Russian travel companies will disappear. Experts believe that losses in this outbound tourism industry will amount to at least RUB 25 billion.

Today in Russia borders are closed and flights to foreign countries are not operated. If at the end of May the coronavirus epidemic in the country declines, then air traffic on external routes may resume no earlier than the end of July-beginning of August. Such delays are explained by the fact that after the decline in incidence, it will take at least 12 weeks to completely neutralize the pathogenic agent.

As the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov pointed out in his interview, the peak of the coronavirus epidemic in Russia is likely to fall in May, and at the beginning of summer the spread of the infection will decline. Even if the borders are open by September and air traffic with a number of foreign countries is resumed, with a high degree of probability quarantine measures can be reintroduced in the Russian Federation from November to the end of 2020.

In such a situation, it makes no sense to plan a summer vacation abroad this year, since no state will be ready to receive foreign tourists, and in Russia at this time the borders will not be open.

It is too early to talk about summer vacations at Russian resorts, since sanatoriums and resort complexes are now closed to vacationers due to the high alert regime. Hotels, catering establishments and the entertainment industry in the tourist regions of Russia also do not work:

  • in Crimea;
  • in Sochi;
  • in the Krasnodar Territory;
  • in the North Caucasus;
  • in the mountainous Altai.

Representatives of the domestic tourism sector hope to be able to open the holiday season this year, albeit with a delay. However, no one knows the exact date yet, it all depends on how the epidemiological situation in the regions will develop.

A number of representatives of the tourism business working in domestic directions believe that weekend tours will be in greatest demand among Russians this year, which are cheaper than vouchers for 7-10 days and do not require a vacationer to leave the area of their permanent residence.

So far, the authorities have not announced the exact date when the borders will be opened to Russians in 2020. According to the latest news, today no country in the world accepts foreigners without passing a two-week quarantine.

In all states, resort areas are empty. With a high degree of probability, this summer, Russians will not be able to relax abroad, not only in summer, but also in autumn, and even in winter.
