The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has unveiled new methods for determining the amount of lead in lipstick. According to recent data from the department, in the bulk of lipstick sold in the United States, the content of this very toxic metal is below dangerous levels.
Lead is a powerful neurotoxin that causes numerous health problems and, in particular, reproductive dysfunction. The substance, entering the body, causes infertility, miscarriage, behavioral and mental disorders, and renal impairment. According to some scientists, the presence of lead in the body may also be one of the causes of cancer.
The study refutes previous claims by the Campaign for Cosmetics Safe (CSC), which in October 2007 warned of dangerous levels of lead in most lipstick samples on the American market. However, the limit of the metal content hazardous to health was announced at that time much lower than today, Infox.ru notes.
The latest FDA reckoning was that the lead content in lipstick samples was below 5 ppm (five parts per million) - the established norm for the state of California (USA) and 10 ppm - for Canada. However, the results of the study could not be compared with the results of the CSC, since the campaign did not disclose the details of the 2007 tests.
It should be borne in mind that a woman applies a minimum amount of lipstick to her lips, tint them even several times a day. That is, the detected share of lead in a full tube is divided into micro doses and becomes even safer and, most likely, is excreted from the body without consequences. In general, during her life, the average woman uses about 4.5 kilograms of lipstick.
