A hundred years ago, "bearded women" enjoyed great success at street fairs in European cities. And it seems that in some countries people are still nostalgic for shows like this. In Austria, this issue was solved in an original way: a girl with a beard will represent the country at the Eurovision 2014 contest in Copenhagen.

Singer Conchita Wurst, aka Tom Neuwirth, will perform from Austria at the popular song contest in the capital of Denmark with the song That’s What I Am. This decision was made by the local selection committee.

The transsexual was nominated even during the election of a performer for Eurovision-2013, but then took second place. Now the organizers have decided to send Conchita to Copenhagen without a competition.

Some Western media note that, fortunately for Wurst, next year Eurovision will not be held in Russia, hinting at the sensational “anti-gay law”. They say, in this case, a transsexual could have many problems.

As specified, in the Austrian show business, Tom's star caught fire after participating in the reality show Starmania. In the image of Conchita, he first appeared on the talent show Die grobe Chance and since then has adhered to an unusual role.

Let us remind you that very shocking artists often take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. So, in 1998, the first place went to the transsexual Dana International, who performed the song Diva. After the victory, Dana International became a superstar, and the single Diva topped the charts in most European countries. However, not everyone in Israel was happy about this - the performer's victory caused a wave of indignation among Orthodox Jews. After 13 years, Dana was again sent to Eurovision, but then she did not make it to the final of the competition.
