A leather chair, a high salary, a staff of subordinates and the opportunity to say: "Anya, make me coffee" - this is, of course, great. And how do you like work from morning till night, huge responsibility and daily intake of sedatives? In general, the position of a big boss can hardly be called a dream, although it also has certain advantages.
We are used to considering the appointment to a leading position as a real holiday - an event on which we must certainly congratulate. Yes, of course, this is career advancement and a certain success in life. But after all, not everything is so smooth with the "big bosses". To be completely honest, in addition to the new entry in the work book, most of them get so many problems that it would be more correct not to congratulate, but to sympathize. A leadership position is a two-sided medal. And if one of them wildly pleases, then the second, on the contrary, discourages any desire to rejoice.
Pros of a leadership position
1. A year in two. We are talking about valuable experience that can be gained by working as a top manager for even a year. If it takes a lot more time for the performer to get big and become a real professional in his field, then, as a rule, all this happens with the bosses much faster. And the secret is the colossal responsibility that falls on the shoulders of the boss from the very first day of his "hard labor". It, like a magic wand, makes a person discover new abilities and absorb all incoming information like a sponge.
If you are really a very big boss, then you can be congratulated on a certain freedom of action.
2. Problem-solution. People in leadership positions tend to be more focused and take a sober view of life, realizing that any problem can be solved. Even if confusion arises outside the walls of the office and does not affect its work at all, the boss immediately draws in his head a plan for a way out of the current situation. His philosophy is simple: if there is a problem, then there is a solution. And experiences will not help a bit.
3. His own director. Of course, it all depends on the level of the position held, but if you are really a very big boss, then you can be congratulated on a certain freedom of action. Of course, your decisions must comply with company policy, but you are free to organize the work of the departments under your subordination exactly as you see fit.
4. Networking guru. People in leadership positions have so many useful acquaintances that "mere mortals" can only envy. What can we say about the fact that the problems of bosses, as a rule, are solved much faster - one call to the right person and that's all - as if there was no difficulty.
5. For righteous labors. The salary of a boss is significantly different from that of a simple middle manager. Still, the daily hassle and huge load should be paid accordingly. That is why the bosses so rarely go on vacation, but immediately to the Maldives, and his subordinates - more often, but to the village to see their grandmother.
Cons of a leadership position
1. There is no one to consult with. It is easier for the performer, if only because he knows that behind his back there is always someone to whom you can come for advice, who is responsible for the final result. And the boss is the last link in the chain of decision-making, and it will not work to push the responsibility onto someone higher. Awareness of this fact puts a lot of pressure on the psyche, some even start neuroses.
2. Not a man - a machine. Most subordinates treat their superiors as if they are not being led by a living person, but by a machine programmed to reprimand, chastise for punctures and pursue personal gain, forgetting about the common good. That is why your innovative solutions may be met with misunderstanding and whispering in the corridors: “It will help to optimize the process, of course. He saves himself for a new car”. You have to come to terms with the fact that loyal subordinates who are willing to trust their boss are rare.
3. All at once. If before you just did your job, now you have to think about responsibilities, and about increasing profits, and about meetings with key partners, and about the dismissal of negligent employees - in general, about everything at once. Those who believe that the boss's head is full of thoughts about what kind of coffee to drink and which resort to go to are wrong. Often they do not have time to eat normally, let alone entertainment.
The boss has to prioritize if he wants to be a good boss.
4. First of all, the planes. The boss has to prioritize if he wants to be a good boss. And, unfortunately, after the placement process, it turns out that he is a good boss, but a family member is so-so. Spouse or spouse, as well as children, dogs, joint weekends and family dinners - all this is relegated to the background. Few people will like this alignment, which is why managers, as real workaholics, begin to have serious problems in relations with loved ones. Of course, over time, everything will return to normal, but at first it is really not easy.
If now you are faced with a choice - whether to agree to such a tempting, but frightening offer to take over as a manager, then before making any decision, weigh the pros and cons. You should understand what you are ready to sacrifice for the sake of career success, and what you will not give up for any money. The main thing, remember, everything has its time: if you do not yet feel the strength to “divide and rule,” then maybe you should wait thinking about the boss's chair?
