The Eurovision 2009 Music Contest will be held in Moscow. This was announced today at a meeting of the government presidium by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

“Considering the level of preparation of facilities in Moscow, the development of infrastructure and the ability to minimize costs, the Eurovision 2009 contest will be held in Moscow,” Putin said on Monday at a meeting of the presidium of the Russian government.

He instructed Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov to present a plan for the preparation and conduct of the competition.

Russia won the right to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 after Russian singer Dima Bilan won the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade.

According to a source in the city government, the Russian capital is ready to do this "at the highest level." “We have extensive experience in holding such events, we will cope with this task - we will receive guests, and we will provide them with transport, and hotels,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the head of SAV Entertainment, Nadezhda Solovyova, believes that preparations for the competition should begin immediately, RIA Novosti reports. “Indeed, Moscow is best prepared for such a huge influx of performers and audience, but for everything to go well, preparations for the competition must begin immediately,” Solovyova said in an interview. According to the promoter, "holding the competition in Moscow will not be more difficult than in other cities, and maybe even easier."

Experts estimate the cost of the competition at several tens of millions of dollars.
