American scientists have discovered a fairly simple way to make humanity happy. According to them, in order to feel all the charm of life, it is enough just to quit smoking. Quitting cigarettes has been found to help relieve anxiety, depression, and mood swings.

Quitting smoking is not only beneficial for physical health, but also improves their mood, according to experts at Brown University School of Medicine.

The study recruited 236 men and women who were trying to quit smoking. Most of the study participants suffered from depression and moderate to heavy drinking.

The researchers gave participants nicotine patches and ran routine tests on each of them for depressive symptoms one week before failure and then at the end of the two, eight, 16, and 28 weeks of the study.

As part of the study, it was found that the vast majority of women who tried to quit smoking experienced a good mood that they never had before they quit the habit.

As a result, 99 of the total number of participants never quit smoking, 44 quit smoking within two weeks, and 33 did not touch tobacco during the entire study period, which was 28 weeks. Those who temporarily quit smoking were happy while not smoking, and their mood dropped after resuming smoking.

As lead author Professor Christopher Kahler explains, the assumption that a so-called withdrawal effect will occur after smoking cessation is erroneous. “If a person quits smoking, depressive symptoms disappear, but if he smokes again, their mood returns to their original state.

An effective antidepressant should work exactly in this plane, - explained Kahler. "Efforts to promote smoking cessation should highlight that a person may feel mentally less healthy when they begin to quit a bad habit."
