The Turner Prize is awarded annually to British artists under the age of 50 for their outstanding contribution to the development of contemporary art over the past 12 months. The winner will receive £ 25,000 and the £ 40,000 prize pool will be shared among the other three finalists.

This year's award-winning conceptual modernist artist Martin Boyce. The artist received the award from renowned photographer Mario Testino at the BALTIC Contemporary Art Center in Gateshead in the north-east of England.

“The Turner Prize has done so much for contemporary art that I'm proud to just be a part of it,” Boyce said. He admitted that he had not even thought about how the award would affect his career in the future and how he uses the prize money.

The laureate is selected by an independent jury, which this year was headed by Penelope Curtis, director of the Tate Britain gallery in London. The jury also included Katrina Brown, director of the Common Guild Visual Arts Center, as well as curators from Turkey and Britain.

The jury noted the artist's attempt to create an urban landscape within the gallery with the installation Do Words Have Voices, which is a conventional tree-beams on which colored leaves swing. Beuys' installation also features paper leaves scattered across the gallery floor and an unusual waste basket.

As the artist himself says, his work hides both the intimacy of a closed space and the freedom of a huge park.

As RIA Novosti reminds, in 2010 Susan Philipsz became the winner of the Turner Prize, in 2009 - Richard Wright. This year, Karla Black, Hilary Lloyd and George Shaw were shortlisted.
