Very often my friends call me to advise on the interpretation of sleep, to suggest what this or that place itches, whether or not to kill spiders, as well as many other things from the age-old folk wisdom, which I was once fond of.

In order not to seem superstitious, I immediately admit that I do not believe in many omens. And to those in whom I believe, I rather treat them as advices that are not devoid of logic: I don’t eat from the knife, I don’t throw away the bread, but I feed the birds, I don’t read while eating, etc. Today is October 14 - Pokrov (for a long time people were married off, starting from Pokrov, when the field work ended). My friends just conspired and on that day they called me to three weddings, entrusting the preparation according to all the rules of the old days.

It turned out that interest in ancient rituals is very strong among highly educated young ladies.

Where do we start? It is POSSIBLE to dress up in a wedding outfit before the wedding (try on)! Nothing terrible will happen, all mystical predictions are nonsense. If, nevertheless, the bride believes the legend (and capturing herself before the wedding in a mirror in a wedding dress leads to the fact that this will not happen again in life), you can use a harmless method - just don’t put on a glove, because if the dress is not complete, then this is not an outfit yet.

Note for those who dress up the festive cortege. It has long been possible to decorate wedding cars with red ribbons only on the second day, and on the first only with blue ones. Today, combining these colors, they are interpreted as blue - the groom, and red - the bride. But the ceremony laid a completely different meaning. The red ribbon symbolized (on the second day!) The innocence of the bride, and the blue one - quite the opposite.

On the second day, the son-in-law came to his mother-in-law with a scarf or ribbon of one color or another.

The custom of breaking dishes at a wedding has survived to this day. You can often watch on the Vorobyovs or on Poklonnaya Gora as newlyweds, having drunk champagne, beat their glasses. However, it is not at all necessary for the groom to break the dishes, since the tradition has survived since the time when the bride broke the pot. They believed that if he crashed, then she was chaste, if not, then no.

I read that Czech customs in this direction are much funnier. The young are herded into a closet, where they take away from each other first a hat, then boots. In the days of paganism, a rite of blowing up took place between the bride and groom. It consisted in the fact that the wife, as a sign of obedience, had to take off her husband's boots. One of them contained a coin. If the young woman was the first to take off this particular boot, then, according to omen, happiness awaited her in family life. Otherwise, it was believed that all her life she would have to slavishly please her husband.

When unpacking, the husband, as a sign of his power, lightly hit his wife with a whip received as a gift from his father-in-law.

During the wedding, the bride's shoes are stolen and a ransom is demanded for them. To hold the bride's shoe in your hands is good luck, because if the girl does not remain in girls, then she is lucky.

It is customary for the bride and groom to leave their old, worn-out shoes. This is done so that everything old, passed through, worn out remains for the young in the past. And so that you never remember how worn-out shoes are not remembered.

Why do they shout "Bitter" at weddings? I observed the custom in its, one might say, truly ancient sense only once in my life. In Central Russia, it was not the newlyweds who were kissing at a rural wedding !!! The bride walked around the guests with a tray; the guest put money on it as a gift; he took a glass on a tray, drank and said: "Bitter!" after that he kissed the bride.

By the way, many different traditions are associated with kisses. For example, in the Spanish city of Mayalda, there is an original ceremony: on the wedding day, the newlyweds are hung upside down. They stay in this position until they manage to exchange a long kiss. Only after that the guests sit down at the wedding table.

If, returning from the registry office, the bride enters the house first, she will lead the family, if the groom, he will be the owner.

The newlyweds at the table must be put on a fur coat turned upside down in order to live richly.

If at the wedding you tie two bottles of champagne with a ribbon and do not drink them, but leave them, the newlyweds will definitely celebrate their wedding anniversary and the birth of their first child.

If the bells ring during the wedding, it is fortunate. Bell ringing disperses evil forces, can remove the effect of witchcraft, since this is the voice of God. Science has already proven that bell ringing purifies the air. The ringing of bells is interpreted differently when the young are already leaving the church - this is a bad sign.

Leaving the church after the wedding, the bride and groom remain silent for as long as possible. It is believed that the one who keeps silent longer will be the main one in the family.

Of course, you shouldn't take all the signs seriously. Rather, it is part of the entertainment program for the audience. By the way, the bride's bouquet has been thrown into the crowd of unmarried girlfriends for a long time. But few people know that the groom should throw a garter from a young stocking into a crowd of single friends, taken off right there, in front of all honest people. I recommend using it - a very funny sight. And bread and circuses at the wedding as nowhere else should be in abundance. This is an ancient custom.
