What funny people find in stupid jokes? An unfortunate ending, American scientists have found out. Moreover, there are not so few ready to laugh at silly jokes - about 40% of people react positively to them.

Scientists at Washington State University found that 4 out of 10 people laugh at silly jokes. The study involved 200 people. They were all told the same joke: “What did the big chimney say to the little one? Nothing. The chimneys cannot talk."

By the way, women appreciate a joke longer than men, as they analyze whether it is really funny and decent. But at the same time, they get more pleasure from a good joke.

The most common reaction was laughter (37 percent of people). In second place was the answer: "This is not funny." Then came a neutral OK. A minority reacted rudely or made sarcastic remarks.

According to scientists, strangers reacted more neutral to this joke, while friends of researchers more often answered negatively, writes Lenta.ru with reference to The Daily Telegraph. According to Professor Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire, people laugh at silly jokes because they don't expect a bad ending.

By the way, the oldest joke of mankind that has come down to us in writing dates back to 1900 BC, experts say, referring to a historical study of the British University of Wolverhampton. The authors of the oldest joke, scientists called the Sumerians who lived in the south of modern Iraq. The joke is this: "But what never happened: the young wife did not let the winds blow on her husband's lap." According to historian Paul McDonald, people joked differently in different eras, but the "toilet" theme is found even in the earliest anecdotes. That is, this kind of humor has always been popular.
