British scholars are delivering good news. They found a cure for infertility in women with low levels of sex hormones. According to experts, the hormone kisspeptin, discovered ten years ago, helps in the fight against a serious problem.
The hormone kisspeptin may become a new treatment for infertility in women who have lost the ability to have children due to low levels of sex hormones. This is the conclusion made by the specialists of the Imperial College London based on the results of the study.
The study involved 10 women who had no menstruation. The use of kisseptin resulted in a 48-fold increase in the level of luteinizing hormone (LH) and a 16-fold increase in the level of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the subjects. It is on these hormones that the occurrence of ovulation depends, and therefore, the possibility of conception.
The action of kisspeptin is due to the fact that this substance increases the activity of hypothalamic cells that secrete the hormone gonadoliberin, which, in turn, controls the level of LH and FSH.
Currently, in such cases of infertility, direct hormonal stimulation of the ovaries is used, which causes various side effects and leads to multiple pregnancies.
"This is an amazing result," said research team leader Walgit Dillow. "It means that treatment with kisseptin can restore fertility in women with low levels of sex hormones."
In the near future, the researchers intend to determine the most effective procedure for using kisspeptin for the treatment of infertility. According to Professor Richard Anderson from the University of Edinburgh, kisspeptin allows you to gently "wake up" the reproductive system, while allowing the body's natural regulatory and defense mechanisms to work.
