The source of the stench is the special skin glands that dogs need in the wild to produce fat. Fat, in turn, is needed to lubricate the wool so that it does not let heat through.

Skin glands help hunting dog breeds feel better in the water, and northern sled dogs do not suffer as much from the cold. The same goes for medium-sized short-haired dogs. As for the sweat glands, they are located between the fingers and also have a smell, but this is not a "doggy" smell. Some breeds may have a cookie smell, and some may have dirty socks.

This is due to the fact that the skin glands, in addition to fat, are also called upon to secrete pheromones (therefore, the smell increases many times during estrus).
