The dog is a great companion, but many are afraid to turn it on because of its peculiar smell. Most people need a dog of medium size for an apartment and odorless - and this is a very important factor in choosing, so it is imperative to know which breeds are odorless. As you know, one way or another, all dogs have a smell, but with proper care it can be minimized.

Odorless dogs

As you know from numerous videos, each dog has its own smell, because it is, in its own way, the calling card of each animal. With the help of it, dogs communicate, learn about the presence of another animal, and so on. But if you take proper care of your pet, wash it thoroughly, then you can get rid of the specific smell that a person feels.

Where does the smell come from

There is a popular myth that dogs, both small and large, smell from sweat, but this is actually not the case. Dogs have virtually no sweat glands (which is why they stick out their tongues during heatwaves, by the way), so the smell appears for several other reasons. The source of the stench is the special skin glands that dogs need in the wild to produce fat. Fat, in turn, is needed to lubricate the wool so that it does not let heat through.

Skin glands help hunting dog breeds feel better in the water, and northern sled dogs do not suffer as much from the cold. The same goes for medium-sized short-haired dogs. As for the sweat glands, they are located between the fingers and also have a smell, but this is not a "doggy" smell. Some breeds may have a cookie smell, and some may have dirty socks.

By the way, castration will help in the fight against the fetid odor of the dog. This is due to the fact that the skin glands, in addition to fat, are also called upon to secrete pheromones (therefore, the smell increases many times during estrus). It is also important to properly care for the mouth and ears of the dog, as improper care of them can also cause a bad smell.

Here are some factors that can influence a dog's odor:

  1. Disease. A sharp odor is a symptom of certain diseases, so it is better to consult a doctor about this.
  2. Age. Small puppies are odorless, unlike older dogs, which are very pungent.
  3. Floor. Males always stink, and always strongly. Females, on the other hand, always smell, but during estrus the smell intensifies several times.
  4. Mud and water. As already mentioned, dogs need skin glands to keep them from freezing in water. Therefore, if water gets on the dog's coat, then they will reflexively begin to release more lubricant, which will increase the smell. Therefore, by the way, after bathing the dog, its fur must be thoroughly wiped and dried so that the smell disappears.

Smelling dogs

There are absolutely no smelling dogs, but there are those in which this smell is expressed minimally, since these are either not hunting breeds, or specially bred long-haired breeds. Thus, 2 types of odorless dogs can be distinguished:

  1. Shorthaired, without undercoat, but with coarse hair. Such breeds get wet more heavily, therefore the skin glands are not so strongly "activated".
  2. Long-haired without undercoat. This wool looks more like human hair than regular wool, so it absorbs the smell. Because of this, there is also practically no sebum secretion, which also reduces the amount of stench.

Care

To prevent the dog from smelling, it must be washed. Here are some tips to help you get rid of the odor from a medium-sized dog:

  • constantly after walks you need to take time to brush the wool. No matter how hard you try, even an inactive dog will always find where to get dirty. Therefore, she needs constant care, including for her paws;
  • bathing. You should wash your dog at least once a week. But if the dog got too dirty and began to smell unpleasant, then bathing, of course, should not be postponed;
  • ears. Oddly enough, but most of all, in addition to paws, dogs get dirty ears. In addition, bacteria spread there, which can make the dog sick;
  • teeth. Many owners do not pay due attention to this procedure, but just a dirty mouth can cause a fetid odor. It can also lead to diseases of the dog's gastrointestinal tract;
  • nutrition. In some cases, your pet may have an intolerance to certain foods, which in turn can lead to odors. Therefore, if you suspect a pet's malnutrition, you should reconsider the approach to its diet.
