In 2019, our citizens were lucky with the May holidays, they recuperate for an unusually long time, as much as 9 days. Why is there so much? This year, such a long rest was facilitated by the shift of weekends from winter falling holidays to May. Of course, people are always interested in exactly what date they do not go to work, and in this case, how we rest on May 9, 2019, what days will be days off, and which ones are postponed from previous holidays.
How are things going with the weekend in May?
So, workers in May have two micro holidays: from 1 to 5 and from 9 to 12 May. Especially lucky are those who have accumulated time off and can combine these two chains into one, this will require three days off - on May 6, 7 and 8. You can take a vacation for these days at your own expense.
What are the features this year?
How do we rest on May 9, 2019? To the uninitiated glance, it may seem that there are too many rest days. Usually, Russians do not rest so much in May.
Indeed, referring to Art. 112 of the Labor Code, we read that in May there are only 2 red days of the calendar, namely:
- May 1 - Spring and Labor Day;
- May 9 - Victory Day.
And we also find from this law: in case of imposition of rest days, workers receive an over-scheduled day off on the working day next to the red day of the calendar (explanation to Article 112 of the Labor Code of Russia).
In order to make more productive use of working hours, the authorities at the end of each year issue legislation on the shift of days off. For example, on 2018-01-10, an appropriate decision was made regarding the shift of weekends and holidays to 2019.
It is necessary to study the above regulation in more detail. How are we resting on May 9, 2019, and what kind of weekend awaits us? The leadership of the Russian Federation decided that the weekend 5.01, 6.01, 23.02 were moved this year.

Weekend Shift: Reasons
Now let's talk in detail about the reasons for the shift:
- January 5 and 6, as you know, are included in everyone's favorite winter holidays, but they got on Saturday and Sunday, because of this they were postponed to the second and third of May, respectively;
- Defender of the Fatherland Day fell on the sixth day of the week, that is, on a non-working day, so it was shifted to May 10.
At the same time, Art. 110 TC. She says that the rest interval between any two 2 work weeks is necessarily at least forty-two hours.
May 9 holiday in Russia
Victory Day was established by the decree of the Soviet government on May 9, 1945. This date immortalized the fact of the defeat of Nazi Germany. Citizens were informed about this early in the morning over a loudspeaker (as you know, then there was neither television, nor, of course, mobile phones, and ordinary telephones were quite rare). It was impossible to plan in advance the end of the war, the unconditional surrender of the German fascist troops precisely by the eighth or ninth.
There were different estimates on the duration of the battles for Berlin, the resistance of the Nazi troops was desperate, but the forces of the Allies in the Anti-Hitler coalition and, mainly, of the Soviet troops far exceeded the resources of the Nazis.
At the same time, seeing the superiority of the enemy and the senselessness of further conduct of hostilities, the German army surrendered. And on May 8, the German command, represented by high-ranking military leaders, signed an act of unconditional surrender.
This meant that the German army could not deliver any conditions and accepted all the demands of the Allies. Why is the holiday celebrated on the 9th, if the Germans surrendered on the 8th? Not everyone knows about this, but the point is this. Time in Europe and time in Moscow differ from each other, as different time zones are involved here. The time in Moscow then differed from Berlin by two hours upwards.
Therefore, it turned out that in Europe the act was signed on May 8, and by Moscow time this fact was stated the next day. Therefore, Victory Day is celebrated in different ways: in Europe on the eighth, and in Russia on the ninth.
So, 74 years ago, Victory Day was declared a holiday and a day off. On this day, everyone was happy, because such a difficult period for the country ended. Subsequently, a general day off was announced. In the future, even an amnesty was carried out. Interestingly, the surrender of Germany did not yet mean the signing of a peace treaty, it was signed much later. Many European countries also began to celebrate this date.
Unfortunately, citizens did not have to use an additional day of rest for long: due to the difficult economic situation caused by large material losses during the Second World War, the day off from Soviet citizens was taken in 1948.
And the second time it became a non-working day only in 1965. This year was chosen for a reason. Twenty years have passed since the defeat of Nazi Germany, the country has recovered from the devastation, and the well-being of the people has increased markedly. For this reason, they decided to give the citizens of the USSR one more day off. To commemorate all this, a large-scale and spectacular military parade was held on Red Square. The citizens of the USSR were very enthusiastic about the news that May 9 became a non-working day.
It is important that if May 9 falls on a weekend, then it is always compensated by adding one extra day, usually following it. On this score, the government of the USSR, and then Russia, issues special legislative acts, usually at the end of the previous year.
As you can see, this year Russians got a wonderful opportunity to relax in May for nine whole days, and those who were able to save time off got a unique chance to create a difficult weekend for themselves, and a mini-vacation and spend them with benefit.

Rest after rest
For 7 days we had fun in full: swimming, sunbathing, tasting Masandra wines and New World champagne … Returning to Moscow seemed like hard labor. While we were on the train for a day, we managed to get tired again and after that we needed a rest after rest. And after a couple of days, my throat started to hurt as usual. As usual - a week later, the vacation spent seemed like last year's dream, and before the next one - like walking to Berlin. That's when I thought: "How is that? You work, you work
