On August 8 of this year, the new season of the Russian Premier League 2020-2021 started, the national calendar of the football championship was drawn up, according to which you can find out the draw of teams and the schedule of matches.

Russian Premier League on football: features of the organization of tournaments

RPL (Russian Premier League) was established in 2001. This is a two-round national football championship, which is held according to the autumn-spring scheme. The championship is attended by 16 Russian football clubs, which, following the results of the qualifying matches, became members of the Premier League. The team that, following the results of 30 rounds in two stages of the tournament, gains the most points, becomes the champion.

Clubs that take 15th and 16th places during the tournament are transferred to the FNL (Football National League). Instead, the two strongest teams, which showed the highest results during the FNL championship, are transferred to the Premier League.

Teams that ended up in 13th and 1st places during the tournament play play-off matches with teams from the FNL in the fight for 3rd and 4th places. The winners become participants in the games of the next RPL season.

For the first time, the Russian championship was held on this principle in 1992. The tournament was called the Higher League and made it possible to identify the best Russian football clubs. The situation changed in 1998 when the Major League was renamed the Premier Division.

Before the organization of the RPL, the management of the most important Russian football championship was carried out by the PFL - the Professional Football League. This year was the date of the RPL organization, which, since 2002, began to hold tournaments according to the current rules.

Until 2018, the Premier League was called the Premier League, which means the Russian Football Premier League. After it was renamed RPL.

What gives football clubs participation in the RPL

The teams that take the first three places in the national tournament of the Russian Premier League become participants in the UEFA Champions League tournament. The clubs that win first and second places are immediately included in the UEFA standings, and the team that takes third place must play qualifying games.

Football clubs that ranked 4th and 5th are eligible for the Europa League. The club, which took 6th place, has a chance to get into the Europa League in the RPL tournament, the tournament of which is considered the second most popular in Europe after UEFA.

This can happen if the fifth-placed club is won by the team that won the Russian Football Cup. In this case, she automatically gets into one of the European cups, and the club that took 6th place in the RPL gets a ticket to participate in the Europa League games.

The 6th-place scheme has been in effect since the 2018-2019 season due to the fact that Russian football is in 6th place in the UEFA standings in the matches played. The last time Russian footballers were able to achieve such high results was in 2009-2011.

In many ways, such high ratings are the result of the matches of the Russian national team during the World Football Championship, which was hosted by Russia in 2018.

Features of the start of the season 2020-2021

Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the organizers of the National Premier League football tournament had to postpone the start of football matches from the beginning to the end of August. In fact, the 29th national football tournament started a month later.

But it is planned to be held according to the traditional scheme: the first part of the tours in the fall, the second - in the spring. The organizers have already drawn lots and drawn up the tournament table. The rules of the competition remained the same, despite the delay in the start due to the coronavirus and the end of the draw:

  • 16 football clubs will take part in the tournament;
  • 30 rounds will be held;
  • each football club will have to play with each of the tournament participants once at home, the second time away.

The table below will help fans and sports betting fans to find their bearings and not miss important matches.
