Believers around the world celebrate Christian holidays that are full of traditions, customs and rituals. One of the main twelve-year holidays is the Holy Epiphany. In order not to miss it and get ready, you need to know what date the Baptism of the Lord is in 2022.

History of appearance

All events that play an important role for Christians around the world are described in the Gospel. It also says about the Baptism of the Lord.

The city of Nazareth was home to Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. At the age of 30, Jesus made the decision to become a priest, to teach his followers. Believers listened to his sermons, repented of their sins, and then plunged into the holy river to accept faith. Jesus Christ came to John and asked to baptize him, as required by the laws of God. Immediately after the baptism, Jesus came out of the river, and the rest of the believers, who were baptized with him at the same time, stood up to their throats in the water and told about all their sins.

When Jesus went ashore, the Holy Spirit appeared in the guise of a dove and a voice was heard, which announced that Christ is the son of God. So for the first time, everyone who stood in the holy water and accepted Christianity through baptism saw the confirmation of the existence of the Lord.

The feast of the Baptism of the Lord began to be celebrated in the II-III centuries of our era. Previously, Christmas and Epiphany were celebrated on the same day - January 6th. And in the IV century, the holiday was divided into two. Through immersion in water, a person participates in the resurrection of Christ, which, according to the Biblical scripture, lasted three days.

When they celebrate

Every year, believers go to the ponds and plunge into the ice-cold water three times. The celebration takes place on the night of January 19. The date of the celebration does not change, therefore, in 2022, it will be possible to observe Epiphany traditions and perform rituals on January 19.

  • after the end of the service, they make a religious procession;
  • taking into account that the holiday is winter, a font in the form of a cross is cut down in the reservoirs;
  • after believers return from service, they sprinkle holy water on their home in order to rid their homes and all those living in it from the evil eye;
  • all the water on this night is holy, so they even take it from the tap, and it does not deteriorate during the year;
  • plunging into water, you can get rid of sins;
  • you need to plunge into the water with prayer and repentance;
