The American Film Academy has unveiled a long list of Oscar nominees for Best Foreign Film. The list includes the tape of Fyodor Bondarchuk "Stalingrad". The fact that the film was noticed by academics is already remarkable. It remains to wait until January, when the final list of nominees will be announced. Let's wish the Russian film good luck, but for now let's remember how the relationship between Russian cinema and the Oscar developed, using the most examples of the most famous films from the entire list of films that have ever nominated for this prestigious award.

The legendary film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's novel, directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, received the coveted gold statuette in 1969 in the Best Foreign Language Film nomination, and was also nominated for Best Artist's Work. It is not surprising that the film impressed the film academics - it turned out to be truly epic. In addition, real professionals in their field shone in it - Vyacheslav Tikhonov, Oleg Tabakov, Vasily Lanovoy, Anastasia Vertinskaya, Oleg Efremov, Nikolai Rybnikov and many, many others.

The sad and life-like picture, directed by Stanislav Rostotsky, about a detachment of anti-aircraft gunners forced to go to the front and fight the enemy under the guidance of an experienced commander, may have knocked out a tear from American film academics. In 1973, the film was nominated for an Oscar, but did not receive an award.

A few years later, in 1979, Rostotsky's other film, White Bim Black Ear, starring Vyacheslav Tikhonov, was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film category. This drama was very popular in the Soviet Union, more than one generation cried over it. However, in pursuit of the award, the tape was bypassed by other applicants.

Two years later, the Oscar again “smiled” at our cinema. The drama by Vladimir Menshov "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears" won the prize. But the tape about three provincial friends who came to conquer the capital, regardless of the statuette, became a real hit. Throughout the history of Soviet film distribution, this film is the second most attended.

In 1985, Pyotr Todorovsky's film A Field-of-War was nominated along with other foreign films. But she didn't win. The picture tells the story of the difficult relationship between the nurse and the division commander, changing over the course of life to the exact opposite. The main roles in the film were played by Natalya Andreichenko, Nikolai Burlyaev, Inna Churikova and others.

Burnt by the Sun

The latest success at the Oscar to date was brought to us by Nikita Mikhalkov's film Burnt by the Sun. In Russia, the film has become truly cult. The director himself played in it with his then little daughter Nadya, and also Oleg Menshikov, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Vyacheslav Tikhonov, Svetlana Kryuchkova and others. The creators of the picture celebrated the triumph in Hollywood in 1995.

Vladimir Mashkov is a fairly successful actor in Hollywood, but even his participation could not ensure the victory for Pavel Chukhrai's film "The Thief". The film was noted only in the nomination in 1997. But the Russian viewer will remember the story of a single mother with a little son, who met a charismatic thief and linked fate with him, will be remembered for a long time.

The play "12 Angry Men" about a jury session has a lot of adaptations. Nikita Mikhalkov decided on one of them, having convened a star cast. The film was attended by Sergei Makovetsky, Sergei Garmash, Yuri Stoyanov, Victor Verzhbitsky and others. The film was included in the list of nominees for the main film award in the world in 2008, but did not become a winner.

Last year, Russia sent a film by Karen Shakhnazarov "White Tiger" to the Oscar competition, which tells about the times of the Great Patriotic War and the invulnerable German tank "White Tiger", to fight against which a special domestic T-34-85 tank was created. The film got into the long list of nominees, but at this its march to the award, alas, ended.
