Measure seven times … take once … pet
Measure seven times … take once … pet

Saint-Exupery's words about the responsibility for those who were tamed have now become fashionable to use in any context. Only their meaning remains, as before, behind the scenes. To say is not to do. A lot of people who sincerely cried in childhood over the White Bim Black Ear, after a few years, part with their own animal for a reason that has a banal formulation "did not agree with the characters."

Whatever claims are made, the meaning is essentially the same. The result is the same: the animal changes owners. But you can avoid many unpleasant consequences if you clearly understand the situation!

Animals have different personalities

You need to decide what you need a pet for. If this is a dog, should she guard the apartment and property, or do you want a kind, flexible companion? Or maybe your dream is a little pocket dog? Depending on your desire, do not be too lazy to study the literature on the breed and go to a couple of exhibitions where you can observe the dogs of this breed and ask their owners about the nature of their pets. The same is true for cats. It is unlikely that an imposing Persian will rush around the apartment and play in the same way as, say, an oriental. And it is unlikely that the Afghan hound will be satisfied with daily walks for 15-20 minutes - this breed needs movement. Even aquarium fish are predatory and eat their own kind. One of my acquaintances was once presented with several large beautiful fish, which in fact turned out to be just like that, and during the day of their stay in the common aquarium they managed to gobble up several small inhabitants …

Animals have different sizes

To a greater extent, this, of course, applies to dogs. However, such a seemingly self-evident fact is not always taken into account! You need to really look at things: a large dog in a small apartment will most likely cause a lot of inconvenience. A Caucasian Shepherd dog lying on the floor in the corridor of the "Khrushchevka" will paralyze movement around the apartment, grandparents will have to step over the huge dog. A school child will not be able to walk a large dog (the accompanying animal must be at least 14 years old), and even if the dog is exceptionally agreeable, in an emergency the child will not be able to react properly. He will not be able to separate a dog fight, he will not be able to restrain an animal if it rushed at someone.

Another global problem associated with large dogs is their transportation. In public transport, the attention of all passengers will be focused exclusively on you; in the metro, you must raise the dog when leaving the escalator, as it can get injured. Not every taxi driver will agree to put a shaggy monster the size of a calf in the cabin. The same problems will accompany you on the train - most likely, you will have to buy all the seats in the compartment in order to reach your destination without hindrance. Most airlines transport dogs in the luggage compartment in special boxes (only if boxes are provided by the airline abroad, then in Russia you should worry about purchasing one in advance), and it is very expensive. Depending on the weight of the dog and the flight range, it can be a tidy ride, comparable to your own ticket. Needless to say - traveling with a toy terrier is much easier than with a great dane.

I must say that any domestic animal, be it a dog, cat, birds or fish, needs appropriate conditions! You can save on buying an aquarium by buying a small sample, but you shouldn't cram fifty fish of different breeds into it and think that they are comfortable coexisting.

Animals are usually covered with hair

And there is often an allergy to wool. In most cases, this is not immediately clear, but if someone in your household is prone to allergies, the chances of failure are great. There are breeds of cats and dogs that practically do not shed, and you need to first of all pay attention to them.

In general, almost everyone sheds. Each type of coat needs proper care. Short-haired animals must be cleaned with a special brush, while such wool is very difficult to remove from carpets. Wire-haired dogs must be trimmed, many others must be cut (by a special master), long-haired dogs and cats must be brushed regularly, because the coat tends to get knotted into mats in which parasites live. And all without exception - to wash. Dogs still have to wash their paws after every walk …

The animal does not immediately become an adult

Except, of course, when you purchase just such a copy. Raising a kitten or puppy is not as easy as it seems. You will have to train the kitten to the toilet (he may have his own views on this problem), wean him to tear wallpaper and carpets, climb curtains, drag food from the table, cling to the legs of a walking person … If you are ready for this, then, in general, then, the upbringing process is quite entertaining. If you lack patience and persistence, be prepared for unpleasant surprises.

With a puppy, the situation is even more complicated. You should be prepared for the fact that up to 6-7 months it will be necessary to wipe puddles (there are only a few dogs that are able to ask to use the toilet before this age), to repair the parquet that has reared as a result. And also wallpaper, linoleum, some of the furniture that sharp teeth have tested for strength, a few pairs of shoes and everything else that you forgot to put away. It is useless to hope that the little puppy will understand what is what. It is even more useless to punish him for his tricks if they were committed in your absence. The only way is to endure grudgingly, buy more toys and put away all the stuff suitable for puppy fun.

Animals, like humans, get sick

And this happens, unfortunately, much more often than we would like. Animals MUST be vaccinated! At the same time, good vaccines cost a lot, plus you need to take the baby to a veterinary clinic or call a doctor at home. Vaccinations are necessary for ANY cat or dog, purebred or outbred. Moreover, they must be set in strict accordance with the schedule. If you have no time to go for the next injection, be prepared for the fact that the animal may have time to become infected in the missed week. Vaccinations are given every year - even an elderly animal can get sick. There is no lifelong immunity from disease.

As you know, in our country every doctor is his own. The veterinarian, however, too. And this is very sad, because such treatment will not lead to good. While you feed the puppy with cognac from a spoon, he will die of enteritis. Salted herring as an anthelmintic is fraught with salt poisoning. Disease prevention, as mentioned above, is expensive, but animal treatment is much more expensive. And there is no delay.

Keeping animals costs a lot

If only because they need to be well fed. It is desirable with special feeds. Which come in different classes. And naturally, the larger your pet, the more it will "eat" your money. And you also need to buy special care products: shampoos and balms, lotions for eyes and ears, brushes and combs. And also cages, bedding, leashes and collars … It is also advisable to take the dogs for training, which, of course, also costs money.

And one moment. Not everyone knows that keeping pets is regulated by law. Of course, it is unlikely that the prescribed rules are strictly followed, but sometimes it is very useful to read them at least once. For example, the Moscow law "On Animals", adopted by the Duma in the second reading, reads:

Article 11. Appearance with animals outside the places of permanent detention.

Citizens and responsible persons of organizations (accompanying persons) have the right to appear with animals outside the premises (territory) of their permanent keeping (to accompany them). An accompanying person can be a citizen who has reached the age of 14. For the actions of persons under the age of 18, the owner of the animal bears responsibility, unless otherwise provided by law.

When accompanying an animal, the accompanying person:

- ensures the safety of the surrounding people and animals, as well as property from harm to the accompanying animals; - ensures the safety of the accompanying animal;

- in the immediate vicinity of transport routes and when crossing them, ensures traffic safety by direct control over the behavior of the animal;

- provides cleaning of waste products of the accompanying animal in entrances, elevators, stairwells, as well as children's, school, sports grounds, places for mass recreation and bathing of citizens, paths, sidewalks and the roadway;

- ensures the presence on the animal of a token issued by the registration authority. When accompanied by animals, it is not allowed: - Leaving the accompanied animals unattended;

- accompanying an animal to persons who are in a state of alcoholic or drug intoxication.

The appearance of animals in a certain area can be prohibited only by a decision of the authorized body of the city administration. In this case, the indicated territory is indicated by appropriate inscriptions.

There are many more things that a person who is going to have a pet needs to know about. This article is in no way intended to dissuade him. Rather, the opposite is true.

In order to solve the problem, it is necessary to thoroughly understand it. And it would also be good to remember: an adult animal transferred to other hands is rarely happy. If you are not sure that you have the strength, time and ability to care for your pet, do not get it! I will not say nice words about the fact that animals do not forgive betrayal. Forgive. Unlike people …
