A scandal erupts in Hollywood. Possibly the loudest in several years. The reason is the absence of black stars among the Oscar nominees. Celebrities are outraged. And the film academy is already trying to smooth out the conflict.

The list of nominees for the main cinematic award was revealed last week. In the five main categories - Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress - there are no black nominees.

The first to be outraged by this circumstance was actress Jada Pinkett Smith. “At the Oscars, people of color often entertain the audience and give out awards, but our acting achievements are rarely recognized. Maybe all blacks should refrain from participating [in the ceremony]? People treat us the way we allow them,”the star wrote on social networks.

Jada was supported by director and actor Spike Lee. In social networks, he said that he was grateful for the honorary Oscar received in November, but he did not intend to appear at the upcoming ceremony. “How is it possible that for the second year in a row all 20 applicants in the acting categories are white? And let's not even talk about other industries. Forty white actors in two years,”he said.

The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reacted immediately to criticism.

Academy President Sherrill Boone Isaacs announced plans to change the membership of the institution. “This is a difficult but important conversation, and it’s time for a big change,” Isaacs said. She pledged that there will be new member recruitment activities in the coming days and weeks to “achieve much-needed diversity”.
