The main premiere of February is undoubtedly the return of Guy Ritchie in his usual guise - a review of the 2020 film "Gentlemen": extremely positive reviews and tremendous emotions. "Finally!" - exclaimed a multimillion army of fans of the British director, who presented the world with such works of cinema as: "Big jackpot", "Lock, Stock, Two, Barrels" and the last on this list is "Rock and Roller", dated as early as 2008 …

Since then, the usual role of Guy Ritchie has been transformed with varying degrees of success from "this is not his a little" to "where did old Guy go?" Over the past decade, the famous director has released five full-fledged works, and now the sixth returns everything to its place: humor, action, composition, plot and many, many world-famous performers (where each is in its rightful place) and all this is accompanied by excellent musical accompaniment by composer Christopher Benstead.

From the very first seconds of the film, you understand who is behind the direction of The Gentlemen and that the farther from the start of timekeeping, the faster you get lost in time and forget about it, swimming somewhere among the narrative from different sources. An interestingly constructed plot, where there is a story in a story, overlapping versions of the same event from different angles with varying degrees of cruelty and perversity of the narrator's fantasy. And all this is seasoned with good-quality sharp humor with a mockery of the so-publicized parables about tolerance.

About the plot without spoilers

The purpose of the whole plot is the same - Mickey (Matthew McConaughey) and his genius in building a business, bypassing the illegal with the help of the law, avoiding turning scams, especially when they are trying to "heat" him. Mickey is the Zuckerberg of the world of Guy Ritchie, who built an empire not on the Internet, but in reality, from which everyone would like to snatch a piece (if not to take it entirely).

“We can say that this is a new gold rush, marijuana is perceived by many as a relatively harmless drug, not too detrimental to health” (G. Richie)

Everything that becomes a hindrance to Mickey is usually sorted out by his right hand - Ray (Charlie Hunnam), and when there is a rumor about the possible sale of Mickey's entire business and that the drug king is going to retire, Ray's work becomes 3 times more.

“Guy and I decided that Ray should turn out extraordinary, perhaps with some deviation, and ready to break at any moment. He is very sensitive to order (C. Hunnam on the role of Ray)

All movements of the heroes are closely watched by a private detective working for a large British publication, Fletcher (Hugh Grant), and he certainly does not care who is right, who is to blame and who pays him, so he "digs" right under everyone, from him (as it seems to him) is the main weapon of the 21st century - information.

It is incredibly interesting to watch what is happening on the screen, in all this confusion you so often put yourself in the place of one of the heroes that you involuntarily become an accomplice in the story. Judge for yourself, there are so many masks and clichés that have gathered in one picture: incomprehensible Russians, the ubiquitous Chinese mafiosi, bankrupt aristocrats in castles, Americans not very beloved by the British. And each has its own flavor, its own chip.

Colin Farrell (his character is a coach) is bound to become a special favorite of the public. Here, who is certainly a gentleman to the bone, is woven into the plot not of his own free will, but in spite of his pupils, who also decided to feel like heroes and cash in on (as they thought) the weak points of Mickey Pearson's business. As a real leader (and a gentleman by blood), the coach stands up for young people and offers his unbearable help to Ray and Mickey in exchange for the inviolability of the younger generation. He turns out, as never before, to the court.

Richie and his tricks

Of course, the director could not have formed a full-fledged puzzle without high-quality corporate techniques (which, it should be noted, the film is not so packed with) and editing. But such a genius of the production simply could not, “having four aces in his sleeve,” ignore the focus on details, because each of the characters (even the secondary ones) has charisma and a distinctive feature, which became the main visual focus.

In addition to acting, facial expressions and physics, there is a smoothing out humor and dialogues, a lot of dialogues, meaningful and lively. I think one viewing is not enough to memorize at least a couple of phrases. And it will turn out as with the movie "Big Jackpot", the picture will scatter into quotes.

Everyone on the set admired and was proud of the joint work with the master, someone not for the first time, someone was lucky enough to do it for the first time. He was watched and felt a special atmosphere, as if he were a conductor putting on a piece of music. Melody and unison are important to him, with alternating drum and double bass.

“Guy is an author in every sense of the word, everything that happens on the set passes through his personal, special filter of vision. And he sees very accurately, but at the same time in an original way”(C. Hunnam)

An important factor influencing perception is watching a movie on a big screen with excellent sound. There are many details that are hardly possible to capture as clearly, looking, for example, on a computer or, even worse, on a smartphone.

"The film was not without improvisation - like in jazz, when each of us picked up the key set by the other, but each part sounded harmonious" (K. Farrell)

In short, the film "Gentlemen" (2020) was a success, the review is only a subjective view, reviews will be collected for a long, long time. The conclusion will be as follows: by running to the cinema, you will definitely not regret the time spent, but on the contrary, remember with pleasure!

"There are not many gentlemen in the film in the literal sense of the word" (G. Ritchie)
