Conflict between fathers and children in the review "Grandfather, hello!"

After hearing the reviews and reading the review, we decided to write our own review of the film "Hello, Grandfather!" (2018), which reached Russia only in 2020. Let's say right away - even though this Finnish film is characterized as a comedy, in fact it makes the audience feel a variety of feelings and deeply think about some things of a social nature. The tape will be released on domestic screens on August 6.

The original title of the painting is “Ilosia aikoja, Mielensäpahoittaja”. Its director is Tiina Lumi, who is hardly familiar to our domestic audience. Yes, and the names of the actors will not give any information by ear, but their performance can be highly appreciated and thanked for their talent.

Brief description of the plot of the film

The focus of the story is on an elderly man (whose name, by the way, has not been pronounced even once for all the time), who has just lost his beloved wife Gert. All the relatives come to her funeral, to whom the grandfather tells them directly: he is not going to live without his beloved and intends to leave after her.

The son of the protagonist, who practically did not communicate with his father since the age of 16, gets angry and says that he will hand him over to a nursing home. The relatives soon leave, and the grandfather is left alone again, but not for long.

Suddenly and without warning, his 17-year-old granddaughter Sophia returns to attend a business conference. The grandfather is not going to bother with the "piglet" and first wants to get rid of it. However, then the hero discovers that the girl is pregnant and decides to protect her from all problems.

Soon, the grandfather, who lost the will to live after the death of his wife, suddenly seems to gain wings, and Sophia herself finds a friend in the person of a relative.

the main problem

When does comedy suddenly begin to dramatically transform into drama? Or when the drama suddenly starts to make the audience laugh?

It is difficult to capture this fine line in the film, because each of its frames combines elements inherent in both genres. In fact, the tape, even if presented as a comedy, is an acute social drama that tells not about two, not about three, but about four generations at once. At the same time, the motion picture looks easy, the whole essence of the problem is presented in it clearly and clearly.

As one of the episodic characters correctly noted, the whole point of the drama lies in the problem of fathers and children. At first glance, it seems that the main characters are different people who are worried about something of their own, and they do not care about others.

He is a lonely old man who has settled remotely in the wilderness, she is a girl whose parents do not allow her to live her own life. However, it turns out that both the grandfather and his granddaughter are abandoned parts of society who have found support in each other.

In the first minutes of watching the tape, it is unclear what awaits the audience, because the general atmosphere, to put it mildly, scares and even makes one think that we are facing a real horror movie. Dark gray colors, music more suited to dramas, and almost no humor. The arrival of the granddaughter becomes the turning point of the whole plot - it is then that the whole world for the main character seems to come to life, and for the audience the picture suddenly begins to acquire new colors.

For Sophia herself, life is changing for the better - finally, she is free from someone's reproaches and orders, finally, she can do whatever she pleases. A more thorough acquaintance, support and the acquisition of some meaning in life - this is what reveals the soul of both characters, for whose relationship the viewer will surely experience all 2 hours of viewing.

We can say that the established connection between the protagonist and the granddaughter solves 3 conflicts at once:

• the conflict of the protagonist with his own son, who was clearly offended by his father because of his excessive desire to be right in everything;
• the conflict between father and daughter, even if it was not shown explicitly and literally;
• a whole conflict of generations, when one is trying to reach out to the other and vice versa.

Emotional surge

The tape is amazing: you can laugh at some of the scenes, and some will definitely bring the viewer to tears. In addition, it makes you think about seemingly ordinary things that people often forget about. Paying attention to loved ones, trying to understand them and establishing relationships with the world and with oneself - it is important to be able to do this.

One thing is clear - after watching this film, the world is already seen in new colors. The project seems to shout: breathe deeply, overcome obstacles and do not give up, because all problems can be solved. The world is full of amazing things, and life is worth enjoying it.
