The "Quills" ("Feathers") literary awards ceremony took place in the USA. This award is presented only for the second time, but nevertheless it is considered very prestigious. Conceived as an alternative to Britain's Booker Prize, organizers of "Quills" - Reed Business Information and NBC broadcaster - honored the best authors in 19 categories - from fiction to food. However, this time the famous king of horrors, Stephen King, for unclear reasons, was left without an award, although he was nominated in the Science Fiction and Horror category for the 2006 novel The Cell.

The Quills Jury's Book of the Year named "Don't Make a Black Woman Take off Her Earrings" by actor and playwright Tyler Perry. Julie Powell became the debutant of the year. Her culinary diary entitled "Julie and Julia: 365 days, 524 recipes and 1 small kitchen" ("Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen") in April 2006 already received the so-called Blooker Prize (for the most interesting blog based on biography and published in print).

Former US Vice President Al Gore received the Quills Award for his book An Inconvenient Truth. In addition to Gore, the prize winners were children's writer Lemony Snicket (real name - Daniel Handler), poet Maya Angelou, author of women's novels Nora Roberts, author of science fiction novels Diana Gabaldon.
