The horror king writer Stephen King and former US Vice President Albert Gore have been nominated for the Quills Awards. The winners of this American award, conceived as an alternative to the British Booker Prize, will be announced on October 10, 2006.

King is nominated in the Science Fiction and Horror category for the 2006 novel The Cell, and Al Gore's The Inconvenient Truth is listed under History and Politics.

Among the contenders for Quills were English novelist David Mitchell (for Black Swan Green) and Edgar Doctorow (for The March), also nominated for "Booker".

Launched last year by Reed Business Information, the Quills Awards are a combination of Popular Popularity and Hollywood Glamor, awarded to favorite writers in 19 categories. The list of applicants determines the "people": publishers, bookstores and librarians. The first winners of the year included the writer J. K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter novels, and singer Bob Dylan, the award-winning memoir book.
