Maxim Vitorgan: "The main thing is that the next year is better"

Film and television actor, director, TV presenter Maxim Vitorgan told "Cleo" about his democratic outlook on life, about his dream project, favorite transport and, of course, about his star wife Ksenia Sobchak, as well as about plans and hopes for the coming 2015.

You have such a busy life, how do you move around the city? Do you spend a lot of time on the road?

- I travel by car all the time, driving is a pleasure for me. I had already outgrown the period when, while driving a car, I was too focused, trying to get into any crack and overtake everyone. This period ended many years ago. Now I try to drive a car in such a way that I do not even notice that I am driving. But in those moments when I am left without a car, I understand how wonderful it is to walk. At the same time, since childhood, I do not like public transport. If, when I was a child, buses and trolleybuses could still please me, then the metro never.

- We make friends sometimes, we meet. (Smiles.)

- What is an unacceptable luxury for you?

- I try to allow myself everything.

- Where did you spend your last vacation?

- We went to Portugal for Xenia's birthday.

- Did you have a nickname as a child?

- No.

- Are you an owl or a lark?

- An owl, of course.

- How do you relieve stress?

- I’m sleeping.

- What is your favorite aphorism?

- Probably, he is, but I can share the unloved: "No one can lead us astray, we don't give a damn where to go."

- What turns you on (annoys)?

- Unloved aphorism. (Laughs.)

- Which animal do you associate yourself with?

- I do not associate myself with animals.

- Do you have a talisman?

- No.

- What melody is on your mobile phone?

- Standard.

- What is your psychological age?

- How do I know? I do not know.

What car do you have now? What is the most important thing in the car for you?

- I rehearse at the same time in two theaters - the Pushkin Theater and the Theater of Nations, and I have rehearsals in the morning and in the evening. Living on Tverskaya-Yamskaya, I walk with pleasure along this triangle. I must admit I like it! Of course, it is not as convenient as by car, when you can have time to call somewhere else. But on the other hand, you have time to think about a lot, talk to yourself. And today, when it is snowing in Moscow, it is especially pleasant to walk.

I must admit that in relation to cars, as, indeed, any technique, I am a complete layman. Recently, though not for long, I drove a Lexus. Luxurious car! It was a large LS sedan that literally floated through the city.

But since I am a person not turned on cars, my requirements for a car are minimal. Since I am a large-sized character, it is important for me that the car is spacious and I can fit in it easily. The minimum set of modern options is all that I need from a car. I'm not chasing big engine power, it's not that important to me.

How do you feel about the ladies behind the wheel?

- Well, I am a man of democratic views and an adherent of tolerant behavior! What can you do, they are people too, they have to drive. And I have to endure it. (U smiles.) But this does not mean that all women drive badly, I did not mean it at all. They just drive according to some of their own laws, different from those of men. They have their own logic, and on the road, even if you are driving from behind, you always see a car driven by a woman. There are things that just need to be taken for granted. As you stop in front of a pedestrian crossing to let people pass, as you wash your hands before eating, you should accept the fact that a woman may be driving. And just in case, carefully move into another lane.(Smiles.) I do not like this male redneck that men allow themselves on the road in relation to women and each other. I always miss another car, I do not swear, I do not scold everyone around. Therefore, women on the road are not the biggest problem in my life.

Let's talk about work: what is more interesting for you: theater or cinema?

- An eternal question! From the point of view of the acting profession, these are two very different jobs. You can't even imagine how different "muscle groups" are involved there. Therefore, it is interesting both there and there. My life develops in such a way that the directorial and dramatic material that I come across and on which I work in the theater is generally much higher than the dramatic and directorial material that I come across in the cinema. In addition, in the theater, the actor can influence the finished “product” much more strongly than in the cinema. Cinema is, first of all, the art of a director, screenwriter, cameraman, and then an artist. So it seems to me, and my experience testifies to it. And also, as a person who does not like to fuss and rush, I like the thoroughness and slowness of work in the theater. Although I have literally just returned from Minsk, where I starred with Sasha Kota for the second season of the series "The Other Side of the Moon". Despite the fact that I have a very small role there, I go there from time to time, starting in the summer. And I got great pleasure from this work, comparable to what I get in the theater. Even if my role is small and, it would seem, there is nothing special in it, but the delicacy that is inherent in the director, the attention to detail, the thoughtfulness with which he does his work, and the atmosphere on the set are wonderful. So everything happens in different ways.

- You have already shown yourself not only as an actor, but also as a director. Which occupation do you prefer? Where do you reveal more?

- I don't know. I like to rehearse in the theater both as an actor and as a director. Both roles are close and interesting to me.

Can you describe your couple in three words? What are you?

- I can not. (Laughs.)

How will you celebrate the New Year? Do you have any holiday traditions?

- No, except for one - to work in the New Year. I really do not like it, I categorically resist it, but I have been defeated in the fight with Xenia for the second year in a row. But I will continue to fight, and sooner or later we will give up this case. (Smiles.)

I am 42 years old, and in my entire life there have been few times when I didn’t care if the next year went better.

What was the past year for you?

- The year was very nervous, tragic, difficult. All this burden is not connected personally with my life, but with everything that happened in the world and in our country. They say: the main thing is that the next year is better, and I think that this wish for me was always relevant. I am 42 years old, and in my entire life there have been few times when I didn’t care if the next year went better. Because so far there are no prospects for the fact that it will be better. At least personally, I think it will get worse. And this is the worst thing. It remains only silly to believe and hope for the best.

What are your main plans for the coming year?

- Work. I am rehearsing "The Cherry Orchard" directed by Mirzoyev at the Pushkin Theater, which will premiere at the end of January. And at the very beginning of March I will have another premiere - this time at the Theater of Nations: Gogol's "The Marriage" staged by Grigoryan. Filming of the film "Election Day 2" is planned for the summer. Next season we will start rehearsals for a new performance in Quartet I, but it will not be Election Day, but a completely different story. I hope that some more interesting shootings will "come" to me, although it is already clear that there will be fewer and fewer of them.
