And yet, in the same year, the king makes the final choice: for him, love turned out to be dearer than the throne. “I have found it impossible to bear the heavy burden of responsibility and fulfill the duties of a king without the help and support of the woman I love,” it was said in the act of abdication. He passed the crown on to his younger brother Georg so that he could marry.

They got married a year later, and since then in the UK it has been customary to pretend that this couple does not exist. Edward and Wallis loved each other for the rest of their lives. They had no children.

Grace Kelly
