The activists of organizations protecting the rights of our smaller brothers are delighted. However, their joy is not at all shared by feminists and some journalists. Indeed, is it correct to include the animal in the list of women who found themselves in the center of public attention in the past year?

The panda named Sweetie has been included in the list of Faces of the Year 2011: Women by the BBC. The animal was listed alongside US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. The list also includes British singer Adele, wife of Prince Albert II of Monaco Charlene, maid Nafissatou Diallo, who accused the head of the IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn of rape, and others.

Gabrielle Giffords became the "face" of January 2011. It was then that an attempt was made on her life, as a result of which she was wounded in the head and spent several months in a rehabilitation center. Adele became the "face" of February. And the "face" of April was the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge Pippa Middleton (Pippa Middleton).

Sweety became the "face" of December 2011. It was then that the Chinese authorities handed over the female and male Sunshine (Yang-Ganag) to the UK on lease. The pandas were taken to Edinburgh Zoo.

The inclusion of the panda in the list of "Faces of 2011" caused a wave of outrage and got into the top of the discussed topics on the Internet. So, on the Twitter microblogging network, the topic was discussed under the hashtag #pandagate, writes Lenta.ru. The Guardian also criticized the BBC, featuring photographs of women and a picture of a panda on the cover of its December 29 issue with the headline "Find an extra image."

The BBC spokesman, in turn, noted that the panda is just a "fun addition" to the list of the most talked about women in 2011, and earlier the corporation has already included animals in similar lists.
