What can be considered the most outstanding event of the twentieth century? According to most Russians, this is World War II. According to a poll conducted by VTsIOM, 16% of our compatriots believe that the Great Patriotic War is a more significant event than a manned flight into space.

The Great Patriotic War is called not only the most outstanding, but also the most tragic event of the 20th century by the majority of Russians (36%). According to the results of research conducted in 1998, the First and Second World Wars (43%) were in the lead in this rating. Next in the rating in 2008 is the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (9%). The wars in Chechnya and Afghanistan are considered the most tragic events by 8% of respondents (over ten years, the share of such Russians has decreased from 14%).

Russians consider space exploration to be the greatest achievement of the 20th century. This point of view is shared by 16% of the respondents. Ten years ago, this opinion was expressed by 22% of the respondents.

In 5% of cases, Russians call the use of atomic energy the biggest achievement (in 1998, it was named in 9% of cases). This is followed by advances in medicine and the invention of the computer (4% each).

As for the most outstanding events, 13% of respondents note the flight of Yuri Gagarin into space, while ten years ago 25% were of this opinion.

Another 5% call the landing of a man on the moon the most significant (ten years ago - only 1%). Among the most outstanding events, Russians also named the October Revolution (4%), Perestroika and the Scientific and Technological Revolution (4% each), the collapse of the USSR (3%), Putin's rise to power and the invention of the computer (2% each), the invention of the atomic bomb, cellular communications, television, as well as the sporting achievements of the USSR and the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow (1% each).
