The topic of surrogate motherhood has been very hotly discussed in the past year. Of course, Alla Pugacheva, who became the mother of twins, made a significant contribution to the development of interest. However, representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church also actively joined, officially declaring the impossibility of baptizing babies born by surrogate mothers. What does society as a whole think?

As it turned out following a survey conducted by VTsIOM, the majority of Russians fully approve of surrogacy. And only a fifth of the inhabitants of Russia declared the inadmissibility of the existence of such a phenomenon.

“76% of Russians admit the possibility of using the services of a surrogate mother. At the same time, 60% of respondents consider it possible to resort to this measure only if it is not possible to have children on their own, and 16% believe it is normal in any situation,”said representatives of VTsIOM.

On January 1, 2012, the Federal Law “On the Fundamentals of Health Protection of Citizens of the Russian Federation” came into force. This legislative act has become the fundamental legal basis for the legalization of surrogacy.

Moreover, every second respondent is of the opinion that surrogate mothers do a useful job, since they give people the opportunity to have children of their own. Respondents with a high level of income more often expressed their willingness to use the services of surrogate mothers than citizens with a low income - 30 and 21%, respectively. Interestingly, the results were distributed among the sample, taking into account the level of education. So, among people with secondary education, opponents of surrogacy are about 30%, and among those who graduated from a university - only 15%.

Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church are categorically against it. For example, last month the head of the Department for External Church Relations (DECR) of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, said that such a reproductive technology as surrogate motherhood is unacceptable from the point of view of Christian doctrine.
