Soon, Tabakov moved to the Studio of Young Actors created by Oleg Efremov, which was then transformed into the Sovremennik Theater. Tabakov worked at Sovremennik from 1957 to 1983. In 1985, he became the rector of the Moscow Art Theater School, and a year later he created the Oleg Tabakov Theater-Studio, which received the nickname "Snuffbox". In 1987, together with Oleg Efremov, he moved to the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater, and in 2001 he became the artistic director of this theater, continuing to work there as an actor and director.

In addition to working in the theater, Tabakov starred in many films, playing, in particular, in the films "War and Peace", "Seventeen Moments of Spring", "Unfinished Piece for Mechanical Piano", "Twelve Chairs", "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers", "A few days in Oblomov's life", "Moscow does not believe in tears", "Mary Poppins, goodbye!", "The Man from Boulevard des Capucines" and others.
