A lot is written about the benefits of garlic, especially supporters of alternative medicine favor it. He is credited with a healing effect on the heart and blood vessels, he is a part of many dietary supplements. But it turned out that only fresh garlic is useful.

Scientists from the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Connecticut (USA) have conducted a study and found that garlic is beneficial only if it is consumed immediately after being crushed or cut.

The secret to the beneficial effects of garlic lies not in antioxidants, as previously thought, but in hydrogen sulfide.

The experiments were carried out on rats: one group of rodents was given freshly cut garlic for thirty days, the other - dried. Then they provoked a heart attack in the animals. It turned out that the heart muscle in the former recovered much faster. At the same time, garlic improved blood circulation in the aorta and increased pressure in the left ventricle of the heart.

According to one of the researchers who conducted the research, Dr. Deepak Das, "Known as the substance that gives rotten eggs their characteristic odor, hydrogen sulfide acts as a chemical messenger in the body, expanding the walls of blood vessels and increasing the permeability of the blood."

That is, it is able to relax the smooth muscles of the walls of blood vessels and thereby relieve spasm and, therefore, prevent heart attacks or strokes. "Processed or cooked garlic loses its ability to produce hydrogen sulfide," says the researcher.

But manufacturers of various dietary supplements will clearly not like this news. It turns out that although it is more pleasant to use capsules than a sharp-smelling fresh product, there is no particular benefit from them. Unless the placebo effect plays a role.
