Want to influence your own dreams? It is possible. As German researchers have found, the smells you smell while resting at night have power over your dreams. Already, experts advise creating a favorable environment for sleeping on your own, using various essential oils or bouquets of those flowers, whose smell has a beneficial effect on the quality of dreams.

Scientists at the University Hospital in Mannheim monitored 15 healthy young women asleep for a month. During the dreaming phase, the participants were told either a pleasant or unpleasant smell, and then woke up. After awakening, the emotional state of the participants was assessed.

It is known that aromatherapy helps to gain spiritual harmony, get rid of negative emotions and even the negative sides of character. Essential oils found in plants have a beneficial effect on the nervous system, strengthening the mind and body. A person knows several hundred aromatic oils, but only a few dozen are used in medical practice.

It turned out that unpleasant smells, such as rotten eggs, cause nightmares in people, and the scent of roses contributes to pleasant dreams. As a result, the researchers found that during sleep, the brain reacts to smells and, depending on the nature of the olfactory stimulus, gives out different "plots" of sleep.

For the first time, otorhinolaryngologists have documented the effect of olfactory function on sleep quality. In their opinion, unpleasant odors irritate the nasal mucosa, thereby sending signals to the brain about external "disturbances", which ultimately lead to awakening. In contrast, pleasant smells help maintain a deep sleep stage and even create pleasant sensations during this time. Doctors in the future plan to apply the results of the study to develop therapy for people with insomnia and increased anxiety.
