Why May 9 is a non-working day

According to labor legislation, there is a clear list of holidays that always become non-working days in Russia. Article 112 of the Labor Code lists them: New Year, Christmas, Defender of the Fatherland Day, International Women's Day, Spring and Labor Day, Victory Day, Russia and National Unity.

It is these days of the calendar that are considered official holidays, are celebrated throughout the country and, despite the day of the week, are non-working every year. Holidays give officially employed citizens an additional rest break.

The weekend in honor of the holiday will last from 7 to 10, since May 9 falls on Monday, May 8 is a day off. At the same time, May 7 is not a pre-holiday day, therefore, no reduction in working hours is provided. The 10th will be non-working due to the postponement of the weekend from January 2.

Postponing the weekend

If the public holiday falls on a general weekend (Saturday or Sunday), the postponement rule applies. In this case, the day off on January 2 was postponed to the working day on May 10 at the discretion of the government, so as not to drag out the New Year holidays. Such a transfer allows citizens to have a normal rest in the spring in May: to go to the country house or on vacation. In addition, the postponement of the day off made it possible to maintain the general norm of working hours.

The calendar already contains a schedule for when there will be weekends and holidays. According to the decree "On the transfer of weekends in 2022", the following transfers await workers:

• from Saturday 1 January to Tuesday 3 May;
• from Sunday 2 January to Tuesday 10 May;
• from Saturday 5 March to Monday 7 March.

Thus, the Ministry of Labor will make the May weekend in 2022 longer - four days off on May 9.
