Scientists have doubted the effectiveness of using aromatherapy for several years. But, as Danish scientists have found out, some types of incense are not only useless, but also hazardous to health. Thus, the systematic long-term use of incense sticks increases the risk of developing cancer of the upper respiratory tract and one of the types of lung cancer.

Researchers at the State Institute of Serology in Copenhagen from 1993 to 1998 surveyed 61,000 Singaporean Chinese, aged 45 to 74, who did not show signs of cancer for the use of incense sticks. The interviewed volunteers were followed up to 2005.

We will remind, earlier scientists from Ohio University published the results of a clinical study of the effect of aromatherapy. As it turned out, the use of this method has absolutely no effect on immunity, pain sensitivity, stress hormone levels and the rate of wound healing. But despite the negative results of the aromatherapy study, scientists believe that it is not necessary to convince a person using this method of alternative medicine and feeling better at the same time that the treatment is untenable.

After adjusting for other risk factors, such as tobacco smoking, it was found that frequent long-term inhalation of incense smoke almost doubles the risk of developing all types of upper respiratory tract cancer and squamous cell lung cancer. Irregular use of incense is not associated with this risk.

It is believed that organic carcinogens such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, carbonyl compounds and benzene contained in the smoke of incense sticks affect the development of cancer.

Based on the findings, study leader Jeppe recommends against using incense sticks on a regular basis, especially in residential and poorly ventilated areas.

Now scientists are figuring out which of the incense can be considered the least harmful.
