What do ladies over the age of 90 do? If your imagination draws a rocking chair, then it looks like you are a little behind the times. Today ladies of a respectable age are not at all limited to knitting and planting flowers, but with pleasure they take part in crosses and even marathons. So, 92-year-old American Harriette Thompson ran a marathon the day before and set a record.

Mrs. Thompson from Charlotte, North Carolina competed in the annual San Diego marathon and covered the 42 km 195 meters in 7 hours 24 minutes 36 seconds.

As noted, on the day of the race, the runner's age was 92 years 65 days. The previous record was set by American Gladys Burrill from Hawaii, who ran a marathon in 2010 at the age of 92 years 19 days.

Curiously, Harriett has an incredible will to win. The lady takes part in the marathon 16 times. Moreover, as the record holder told reporters, this year turned out to be difficult for her - in January, the athlete's husband died. Thompson also said that every year she promises to his relatives and friends "to end his sports career", but it does not work out: "When I run, I tell them that this year will be the last, but the new year is coming, and I again go out on the distance." …

In the past, Thompson managed to defeat oral cancer three times.

Does the lady have secrets to help overcome the distance? “I am a pianist by profession and during the marathon I constantly play old compositions in my mind. It helps a lot to get through to the end,”said Harriett. She added that she was somewhat surprised by the attention from the press and the public. “I am surprised by the general interest in my person. I do not think that I have done something extraordinary, although I am pleased."
