The essence of the procedure is to destroy the natural brown pigment melanin in the iris using a specially tuned laser. The procedure takes about 20 seconds, after which the eyes gradually turn blue over the course of 2-3 weeks. In this case, the color of the iris of the eye changes forever.
Homer stated that he is convinced of the safety of the new technique. However, Elmer Tu, a spokesman for the American College of Ophthalmology, noted that the release of melanin into the intraocular fluid during the procedure could theoretically increase the risk of developing pigmentary glaucoma, a severe disease that can lead to blindness.
Further tests of the method, which will last at least a year, must confirm or deny these concerns. If successful, the new device will be on the world market in 18 months. The estimated cost of the procedure is about five thousand dollars.
