Main church events in February

There are only a few church days in February 2022 that are considered particularly important for believers.

Presentation of the Lord

This is a great Orthodox holiday. Its name literally means "meeting". On this day, the church celebrates the meeting of the baby Jesus with Saint Simeon the God-receiver in the temple of Jerusalem for the rite of dedication to God. In paganism, this holiday was called Thunderstorms.

The Slavs began to celebrate the Presentation of the Lord only after they adopted Christianity. Forty days after the birth of the Savior, his parents brought the baby to the temple. Tradition says that a priest named Simeon, who after that day was called the God-Receiver, lived for about three hundred years in anticipation of the Messiah.

Previously, on this date (15th), the Slavs celebrated the so-called Gromnitsy. The essence of the event was the meeting of winter with spring. It was believed that the cold was about to begin to recede and warmth would come.

On this day, they glorified the god Perun and the goddess Gromnitsa, brought sacrifices to them. Thus, the celebration of the Presentation combines both pagan and Christian traditions.

For example, unmarried girls are allowed to guess at the groom on this day.

On a holiday, it is forbidden to engage in hard physical labor, scold and be sad. It is undesirable to go on a long journey or move to a new place of residence, otherwise you should expect problems on the road.

Memorial saturday

This day falls on the 26th. It is customary to commemorate deceased relatives and friends. Believing Christians bring food to the church, light memorial candles, and name those who need to be mentioned during the service.

Since olden times, on memorial Saturday (which is also popularly called Meat Pastry), there is a well-established tradition of making pancakes. The very first of them refers to the graves of deceased parents. The rest are given to children and beggars to remember the deceased. This day is also called Small Carnival.

In the evening, all relatives gather at the table for a commemoration. An odd number of dishes are put on the table, a candle is lit. From each salad or side dish, a little is left especially for the souls of the deceased. Before starting a meal, it is customary to pray, and after prayer, to eat kutya.

It is called Meat Salad because it is celebrated right before Meat Sunday. This is the last time before Lent when you can eat meat dishes.

It is forbidden to drink alcohol during memorials at the graves, to clean the house or work hard. It is also forbidden to remove dishes from the table until the early morning.

Pancake week

This festival in Russia is always celebrated in the last seven days before the start of the many-day fast. It is not surprising that many want to know what date Maslenitsa is in 2022.

With the beginning of the celebration, they arrange merry festivities, bake pancakes. For the Slavs, the main attribute of the holiday is the Maslenitsa effigy, which symbolizes farewell to winter and welcomes spring.

This year Maslenitsa will start on 28.02 and will last until 6.03.
