The Russians have already begun preparations for the New Year. Some are already buying gifts, others are just planning festive events. But everyone is interested in whether December 31, 2020 will be a working day or a day off in Russia.

Do I need to work on December 31

The last day of 2020 is Thursday. In accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, on December 31, all hired employees will have to work.

This day is recognized as a pre-holiday day, therefore in organizations and enterprises it will be reduced by 1 hour.

The law also provides for the operating mode of those companies that must operate continuously or where it is impossible to shorten the working day. In this case, the employer is obliged to compensate all overwork to his employees. This can be done in two ways:

2. Pay overtime in accordance with overtime regulations.

The working hours of hired employees on December 31, 2020 and during the New Year holidays will not differ with a five-day and six-day period. In 2021, Russians will rest until January 10 inclusive. The first business day will be Monday, January 11th.

Postponement of holidays

In 2021, January 2-3 falls on Saturday and Sunday. These days are considered public holidays. According to the legislation of the Russian Federation (Article 112 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation), they must be postponed to the next weekdays.

The Russian government decided not to reduce working days in January. Instead, the weekend for the 2nd and 3rd numbers will be rescheduled. For this, November 5 and December 31, respectively, were selected.

In 2021, the Ministry of Labor proposed to carry out the transfer of one of the January weekend to December 31. Most likely, the decision will again remain with the regional governors. On an ongoing basis, New Year's Eve is not planned to be a day off in Russia yet.
