Starting today, it has become a little easier to travel abroad. From March 1, citizens of the Russian Federation can receive a new passport with an electronic data carrier and valid for 10 years.

The number of pages in the new passport will be increased. The old one had 38, the new one has 46 pages. In the document of the new sample, the security element in the form of a circle made of metallized film with a diameter of 19 millimeters will be located in the upper right corner of the second page. In the structure of this film, there is an additional image of the passport holder, which can be seen from various angles. Soon, information on the cornea of the eye and fingerprints will also appear in the passport. This, according to experts, will enhance the protection of the document against counterfeiting, as well as bring Russian passports closer to international standards.

According to FMS employees, the procedure for obtaining a biometric passport does not differ significantly from obtaining a document of the previous sample.

A citizen will need a completed application form in duplicate, a receipt for payment of the state duty (for a passport for ten years - 2500 rubles, for an old-style document - 1000 rubles), a copy of a work book, a photocopy of a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation, a photo. For persons of draft age, in addition, a military card with a mark on the end of military service or a corresponding certificate of the military commissariat at the place of registration is required.

At the same time, documents of the old type, without the biometric data of the owner and valid for five years, as before, can be issued at the department of the Federal Migration Service.

The citizen himself decides which passport to receive.

According to the employees of the department, in order to minimize the time for obtaining a passport, the FMS, together with the FSB, has worked out the mechanism of electronic interagency coordination in an experimental mode. “As a result of the experiment, passports are issued and are ready for issuance in 15-20 days, the number of cases of foreign passports being issued in violation of the deadlines has decreased by 81%,” the FMS informs.
