It became known that Ivan stood up for the members of the Pussy Riot group, who were arrested for performing at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. In no way denying their guilt and condemning their behavior, Okhlobystin writes that the further detention of the members of the group can provoke distrust of parishioners in the ROC. Ivan also believes that the desecrated altar must be closed until all the members of the group repent of their atrocities before it.
