The Russian director recently received the Silver Lion award at the International Venice Film Festival for his new film White Nights of the Postman Alexei Tryapitsyn. It was assumed that the film could also be nominated for the Oscar from Russia, but Konchalovsky hastened to appeal to the Oscar committee with a request not to discuss or consider his work as a potential film for nomination for Best Foreign Language Film

“There are two reasons for this - personal and public,” explains the filmmaker. - In recent years, I have rather sharply criticized the Hollywoodization of the Russian market and the detrimental influence of commercial American cinema on the formation of the tastes and preferences of our viewers. In this regard, it seems to me just ridiculous to fight for the possession of the Hollywood Prize”.

Representatives of the Russian Oscar committee are planning to determine the picture that will represent Russia at the Oscars at a closed meeting on 28 September.

According to Konchalovsky, the award of the American Film Academy is currently being overestimated and creates the illusion of world recognition, which is very controversial. "The very formulation of the category" Best Foreign Language Film "should cause laughter among the world's filmmakers; in essence, this is a segregation of world cinema from the Anglophone world, which, in my opinion, is an obsolete Western idea of its cultural dominance," the director writes. in circulation.

He notes that in the modern world, the development of cinema has long been determined not by the massive success of American or pseudo-American cinema, but by artists from Asia, Latin America, the Far East, and Russia as well. And the director does not exclude that in the future a world film award may be created, where “a film in English” will be allocated to a separate category.
