Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching, and doctors traditionally recommend not to abuse alcohol. But who will remember useful advice during corporate events and mass festivities? However, the negative consequences of abundant libations can, if not be prevented, then at least mitigated. For example, American scientists do not recommend overusing whiskey.
Scientists at Brown University in Rhode Island conducted an experiment on 95 volunteers, aged 21 to 33, who had no health problems. The subjects, divided into two groups, drank “significant amounts” of alcohol for three evenings, in amounts exceeding the average intoxication limit, one group drank vodka, the other bourbon, that is, American corn whiskey. The main difference between bourbon and European whiskey is that bourbon is made from corn, not barley, and aged in special barrels.
Earlier, a group of British scientists from the University of Reading found that champagne contains polyphenol, a plant chemical that dilates blood vessels and reduces stress in the heart and brain. "We found that a couple of glasses of champagne a day has a beneficial effect on the walls of blood vessels, which reduces the risk of heart disease," said study leader Dr. Jeremy Spencer.
Every morning at seven o'clock, doctors woke up their "patients", examined and interviewed people who had a hangover. The ability to concentrate in both groups was approximately the same, but those who drank bourbon complained of much more severe hangover symptoms - headache, nausea, thirst and fatigue - than those who drank vodka, writes RIA Novosti.
According to the head of the experiment, Professor Damaris Rochsenau, the difference from hangover syndromes after whiskey and vodka differs in that whiskey contains 37 times more toxic substances - congeners, that is, by-products of fermentation. Congeners contain acetone, acetic algidide and tannin.
